  4. Past participles • Verbs have forms called past participles which can be used as adjectives. • torcer- to twist • torcido-twisted • I twisted my ankle. Me torcí el tobillo. • My ankle is twisted. Tengo el tobillo torcido.

  5. ar verbs • form past particples by adding -ado to ar verbs • hinchar- hinchado -swollen • cortar- cortado- cut • quemar- quemado- burned

  6. er/ir • for ir/er verbs add -ido • herir- herido injured • torcer-torcido twisted

  7. irregulars • romper- roto broken • abrir- abierto open

  8. they are used as adjectives • because these past participles are used as adjectives, they must agree with the nouns in number and gender. • rodillas hinchadas- swollen knees • hombros rotos- broken shoulders

  9. the articles • when using reflexive pronouns to talk about injuries, use definite articles before the parts of the body • Me quemé el dedo. I burned my finger. • Se torció el tobillo. She twisted her ankle.
