  12. NSPCC – Teenage Abuse • Improving Safeguarding in Schools (ISIS) is a new online self-assessment and development resource to help schools improve children's safety and well-being. ISIS features a step-by-step online guide to help schools audit how they are meeting safeguarding standards. The standards have been cross-referenced with the OfSted self-evaluation form and National Healthy Schools framework. ISIS covers six quality areas:

  13. NSPCC – Teenage Abuse (cont) • promoting emotional health and well-being • pupil behaviour • child protection • safety and security • governance • staff • ISIS will build the skills and confidence of staff and governors in safeguarding children. It will reassure parents and carers that the school is actively involving pupils in improving standards to help keep them safe. For further information visit www.nspcc.org.uk/isis

  14. ChildLine Schools service Direct quotes from children: “If children know that there is a lot of help out there they wont be scared to tell” “Abuse should be discussed but no one wants to talk about it”

  15. Aims The aims of the ChildLine Schools Service are: • To ensure children have an understanding of abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of abuse. 2. To ensure children know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse. 3. To make them aware of how to get help and sources of help, including ChildLine.

  16. Delivery The ChildLine Schools Service will: • Be delivered in all primary school every two years across England, NI, Scotland and Wales • Be focused on children from 5 to 11 years old, with a particular emphasis on 7-11 year olds. • Involve an assembly and interactive workshop

  17. Assembly and workshop The assembly and workshop will cover: • Definitions of abuse – physical, emotional, sexual and neglect • Where to and who to go to for help – including teachers, social workers, parents • Information about ChildLine HelpLine and on line The Workshops are interactive involving games, discussions, whole class and small group activities. Teachers and school staff play an important role in helping to deliver safeguarding messages to children. • Contact: Jan McDonald • 01489 895823 • 07834498319 • jaspinall@NSPCC.org.uk

  18. Healthy Schools update 1 A reminder that: • The national Healthy Schools toolkit is hosted on the Department for Education website. • www.education.gov.uk/healthyschools • from the home page find it on Schools > Pupil Support > Pastoral Care section. • The Whole School Review tool and the Healthy Schools planning template (with its associated School Story template) are the main tools. • The toolkit also contains information and frameworks for identifying needs, defining outcomes, developing activities/interventions and reviewing achievements.

  19. Healthy Schools Update 2 • These tools are used within the Hampshire Healthy Schools Process which is explained on the local Healthy Schools website: www.hants.gov.uk/healthyschools(under ‘Healthy Schools toolkit’) • Deadline for the submission of completed Whole School Reviews : Tuesday 15 November 2011. The quality assurance group meets on 22 November to consider submissions. • In the future there will be a Hampshire Healthy Schools portal where schools can complete and submit their reviews but in the meantime follow the Process.

  20. Hampshire Healthy Schools Process for Schools Complete the Whole School Review (WSR) Template and audit health and wellbeing needs to identify priorities. Email WSR and chosen health and wellbeing priorities to Healthy Schools Team representatives. Download the Healthy Schools Toolkit from the DoE / or local Healthy Schools website. Achieved all outcomes related to a priority area. Email School Story template to HS Team. Receive confirmation of Hampshire Healthy Schools Challenge Award. Whole school celebration. Complete planning template and begin to work towards health and wellbeing priorities and outcomes. Receive confirmation of Hampshire Healthy Schools Status , after WSR reviewed by Hampshire Quality Assurance Group. • Helpful Hints: • The Whole School Review (WSR) replaces the Annual Review. • It is recommended that the WSR is submitted biennially (every other year) to maintain the foundations of health and wellbeing. • Schools should select a minimum of one and no more than two health and wellbeing priorities. • A random sample of WSR will be selected for an in depth review by the Hampshire Healthy Schools Team. • The Healthy Schools Planning Template replaces the HWIT tool. It is recommended that up to five outcomes can be selected per priority area. • Support for schools will be provided through training days, network meetings, local Hampshire website, termly briefing sheets, PDL Newsletter and School Comms. • Healthy Schools Team representatives for WRS are: glynis.wright@hants.gov.uk and anne.mccarthy@hants.gov.uk
