  2. 1) Let go of your fear • Natural to fear the unknown • Comfort extends to frequented ponds • Fish are more afraid of you than you are of them • Finding a swimming partner catalysts comfort

  3. 2) Safety • Never tread over another swimmer • Never swim alone • Swim in 9°C+, any colder risks your health • Learn competency in a supervised area (ex/ lifeguard) • If unsure, swim parallel to the shoreline • Review all standard swimming safety protocols

  4. 3) Materials • Swimming Goggles • Swimming cap • Wetsuit • Legs are more buoyant • Back is effortlessly arced • Upper body activity • Slower stronger arm entry/higher arm attack angle

  5. 4) Sighting • Sighting gives visual confirmation that you’re on the right track • Use the largest object visible and mark your target from that • Safety precaution • Typically every 3-5 strokes

  7. 5) Turning • The fastest way to make a tight turn in swimming is a corkscrew turn • Rotate your body as if spinning and maintain a frontcrawl stroke with crossover • Allows swimmer to take a 90+ degree bend without sacrificing speed

  9. 6) Racing • Excluding triathlons there are 5 open water swim races in Newfoundland (see appendix) • Drafting increases speed and saves energy but sacrifices position
