  1. Manna vs. MunchiesTaking Care of the Physical Temple We’ve Been Given Week 2 - It’s Not My Fault! Right?

  2. Roadmap Week 1 - Why does it matter? Week 2 - It’s Not My Fault! Right? Week 3 - Feeding the Body Week 4 - How Far did Jesus Walk? Week 5 - Mind Over Matters Week 6 - Current Issues and Quacks Week 7 - Feeding the Family All audio/visual available at “timlightfoot.com” (click on “Focus Classes”)

  3. Predestination • Psalms 139: v 15-16 • “15My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

  4. J. Lightfoot, ‘93 D. St. John ? ? Nature vs. Nuture?

  5. It’s Not Your Fault

  6. Taken to the Extreme

  7. Genetic predisposition • What is ‘predisposition’? • a tendency, inclination, or susceptibility. • A tendency, inclination, or susceptibility arising b/c of genes • These genetic predisposition(s) affect your traits (i.e. physiological, mental, health characteristics)

  8. Your traits • Trait = Genetic + Environment + GE Interaction • Trait = G(100%) + E(0%) + Gei(0%) • Genetic certainty (not predisposition) • Cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator gene • Good News! • Most traits are a combination of genetic and environment effects • The closer genetic effects are to 100%, the less it is ‘predisposition’ and the more it is ‘certainty’

  9. SNP! Terms for the future • More good news! - Few single gene disfuncions • SNPs - single nucleotide polymorphism • Patterns of these SNPs can be associated with different traits, diseases, conditions

  10. Genetic Predisposition

  11. - 23andme - Navigenics • - Decode Genetics Can you find out what you are predisposed to? • Three commercial services • Just beginning • The question is: Do you really want to find out?

  12. Does Predisposition = Destiny? • By definition alone, predisposition does not equal predestination. • For traits where environment plays a role, then predisposition can be offset. • In general, the higher the genetic predisposition, the harder it is to offset.

  13. A side note - genetic discrimination • The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) has been put before Congress for the past 12 years. • The Senate passed it twice in the past only to have the House block it. • The House recently passed it (420-3), but Sen. Tom Coburn (OK) put a legislative hold on it. • Coburn says that the bill would spur frivolous lawsuits. • The bill is opposed by the US Chamber of Commerce and the National Retail Federation.

  14. An faulty logic-extension • “Hey, I’ve got the ‘fat’ genes. So, if God knew me in the womb, then he knows I’ve been made to be fat/inactive. Yep, I’m just made to be fat.” • “Plus, you know, I’m already saved. Therefore, I don’t need to worry about all of this health stuff. As a matter of fact, it appears I’ll just get to see him sooner this way….”

  15. Scripture 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV) Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.

  16. Working for the kingdom • “Being healthy allows you to be a better servant of the Kingdom.” D. Williams • “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into tempation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” Matt. 26:41 • “If you are not working toward being healthy - making your temple healthy - are you really seeking God?” D. Falls

  17. How To Overcome Predisposition: • Decide to change • Precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance • Preparation - Know the facts (pubmed.org) • Stay away from quacks (quackwatch.com) • Take action (weeks to come) • Maintain (after 10 weeks - it’s a habit)

  18. We all have choice • Deuteronomy 30(NIV) “19This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live,…” • Proverbs 1(NIV): “28Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. 29Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord, 30since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, 31they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of the schemes.”
