  8. Dental Plaque - an invisible sticky film of bacteria on teeth. • It is near the gum line. • Calculus is hardened dental plaque.

  9. Data • 42% of children 2 to 11 have had Tooth Decay in their primary teeth. • Black and Hispanic children and those living in families with lower incomes have more decay

  10. Brushing teeth - helps remove plaque from the exposed surface of the teeth. • Flossing - helps remove dental plaque & bits of food stuck between teeth.

  11. Cavity - a hole in a tooth. • Gingivitis - a condition in which the gums are red, swollen, and tender. • They bleed easily

  12. Braces - devices that are placed on the teeth and wired together to help straighten the teeth. • Retainer - a plastic device with wire that keeps the teeth from moving back to their original places.

  13. WAYS TO CARE FOR YOUR TEETH • Brush your teeth & tongue after each meal • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to prevent injury to the gums. • Use toothpaste with fluoride. • Floss your teeth each day. • Limit the amount of sweets that you eat.

  14. WAYS TO CARE FOR YOUR TEETH • Eat foods that contain calcium, vitamin C and D to strengthen teeth. • Wear a mouth guard for sports in which teeth might be injured. • Avoid risk behaviors that might cause oral cancer. (smokeless tobacco, cigarettes)

  15. WAYS TO CARE FOR YOUR TEETH • Know the signs of oral cancer. • 1. a sore in the mouth that bleeds easily. • 2. a sore that does not heal. • 3. a red or white patch in the mouth. • 4. difficulty in chewing or swallowing.

  16. What people used long ago to clean teeth • ground-up chalk or charcoal • lemon juice • ashes (the stuff that’s left over after a fire) • tobacco and honey mixed together
