Chemistry Achievements 2010 • 9.5 FTE Academic Staff & 0.5 FTE Senior Tutor (teaching only) • Mean Taught Paper Quality Semester A : 1.6 • 31 Refereed Journal Articles • 16 Posters or conference presentations or invited seminars • 8 MSc (Research) , 1 PhD and 1 MPhil completions; 24 current MSc (Research), 16 current PhD. • 2 Te Tipu Putaiao Scholarships, 2 UW Doctoral scholarships, 4 TechNz scholarships, 1Environment Waikato Scholarship, 1 ESR scholarship; all new in 2010. • Active research collaborations with : Agrifeeds, Ballance, Cawthron Institute, Dow Agrosciences, Environment Waikato, Fonterra, Hexion, Hill Laboratories, IRL, Landcare Research, Nature’s Country Gold, NIWA, NZ Biotechnologies, Plant & Food, SCION, Steen’s Honey. • International collaborations active with Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, France, Germany, Singapore, Thailand, UK, USA(Hawaii, Montana, Chicago, Texas) • >300 High School students hosted at ChemQuest, analytical chemistry competition, NCEA Scholarship Day

SoSS Achievements 2010 • Surviving the birthing process on 15th March 2010 • From 5 former departments: GTEP; History; Philosophy & RS; Political Science & PP; Societies and Cultures; linked to Population Studies Centre (and its Marsden success). • Early stages of Bachelor of Social Work • First year of placements and appointment of two new staff • Bachelor of Environmental Planning • CUAP approved, teaching already, new appointments • Surviving a difficult redundancy process

FSD Procurement Office Achievements • Chairperson of the UPG (Universities Procurement Group) in 2009 • Completed UPG accommodation & branded clothing tenders plus UOW specific tenders for internal audit & security services • Launch of new Procurement Policy • Creation of various reports to monitor policies compliance – self-approvals, PCard audit • Moved all suppliers into Unimarket – now moving the receipting and approvals processes  into Unimarket • Continuous  advice and support at a tender and day to day purchasing level

Development Office Achievements 2010 • Launched a direct alumni and friends fundraising appeal for the first time in 5 years, sent to 28,000 individuals • Implemented Payroll Giving so that staff who donate to the University can get an immediate tax rebate of 33.33% • Coordinated effort to find ‘lost alumni’ through mediums such as Community, E-News, Off Campus, events, graduation and our website • Markedly improved merchandise sales through product improvement and re-location to Bennetts, 5% of sales goes to support scholarships • Successful bid to Environment Bay of Plenty to fund $1.5 million over ten years to support a new Chair in Coastal Science • Other major gifts include $50,000 from both Priority One and Port of Tauranga for Intercoast, $50,000 from Antarctica NZ for ICTAR, a $25,000 bequest for scholarships, and a pledge of $90,000 over 3 years for a WMS fellowship

ITS Infrastructure Achievements 2010 • Evaluation of solutions and selection of Google suite of enterprise products for Project Fusion (see www.waikato.ac.nz/project-fusion) • Replaced aging network Firewall with next generation technology that will allow us to now greatly improve network security • Server virtualisation and ‘cloud’ infrastructure strategy continues to provide great results – 72% of servers are virtual with 152 virtual production servers running on 7 physical servers • By End of Year: • Eduroam and improved staff wireless network • Wireless network expansion • Desktop backup service • New telephony solution – vendor and solution selected • Home drive and Departmental shares expansion started

Andrews Memorial Award, the top Food Technology award bestowed by the New Zealand Inst. Of Food Science and Technology. 1 Teaching Excellence award A successful 2010 Engineering design Show. 3rd year Mech. Eng student Victoria McCullough wins $3000 Society of Petroleum Engineers scholarship. PhD student Paul Ewart gains a Fulbright scholarship to spend 1 year at University of Texas An engineering technician, Pawan Shrestha wins a Queen Elizabeth II scholarship spend two months at Cambridge University Another racing car designed and built for the SAE competition in December 2010
