  1. 2nd Grade News October Welcome to the 2nd Grade News! At the beginning of each month, you will be receiving this newsletter to update you on what’s new in our room, what we are learning and special things to come!Happy October! Wow! What a wonderful September we had! Students in all sixsecond grade classes have been busy getting to know their classmates and their teachers! We are enjoying each day and look forward to an exciting year! We had a fantastic turn out for Back to School Night. Thank you for visiting our classrooms and learning about all the wonderful things we will be doing this year! First Quarter Conferences Our Fall conferences are quickly approaching. Please make sure to check with your child’s teacher if you have not yet scheduled your conference. The following will be discussed at the conference: • DRA Scores • Academic Progress • Transition Academics In September, we studied citizenship, safety and communities. We learned about Helen Keller and Susan B. Anthony. This month, we will be learning about various habitats and the food chain, as well as begin our unit on American Indians. In Math, we will focus on patterns, estimation and addition and subtraction facts. Second Grade teachers will also be in the process of giving DRA’s (Developmental Reading Assessments). In House Field Trips This month, we are fortunate to have special visitors to help us enhance our Science (Habitats) Unit. Loudoun County Animal Services will be presenting information on wildlife, food chains, and habitats. They will also share the importance of the Animal Shelter and the essential role an Animal Control Officer plays in our community. So much to learn! More information to follow. At the end of the month, we will have special visitors from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. They will be teaching us many wonderful things about the American Indians and their way of life!
