  1. Inclusive DesignMore than Bricks & Mortar Martin Sabry aIDEAS Ltd — (allInclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions) March 2009 aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  2. Agenda • Inclusive Design & Changing Population Demographics • Integral Accessibility - Current Situation & Challenges • aIDEAS - Delivering Design Solutions • Lessening Disability Limitations via Inclusive Design • Technology Innovation Examples • Future Challenges - Inclusive Design Moving Ahead aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  3. Inclusive Design & Demographics • Disposable income spend priorities: 1st property 2nd travel & transport 3rd shopping • By year 2025 >50% population will be >50 years old. • Broadening usability by as little as 10% could open combined market opportunities of >£50 bn in the UK (2006) • Pool of hidden innovators (over 50s, ethnic minorities, disabled including dyslexia) could potentially add £15 bn to the UK economy by 2012 (Case Business School, May 2008) • £125-250M/yr market for tools & consultancy UK Health Care DeliveryGlobal market of £4-8 bn pa (MATCH program, 2008) aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  4. Inclusive Design & Society • Inclusive design enables barrier-free products, services and environments for use by a broad spectrum of the public, regardless of age, physical ability or situation • Current climate of social inclusion • aIDEAS follows the guidelines of simplicity, flexibility, spatial awareness and equitable use • Inclusive design solutions ultimately provide maximum benefit, minimum effort living aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  5. Integral Accessibility • Danger is to think of accessibility separately from the design • Problem can be reduced by asking repeatedly throughout the design process: 1. How do I get to the building/product/service ? 2. When I get to the building/product/service where do I start using it ? 3. How do I start using it ? 4. Having started what would I like to do ? 5. How do I find my way around ? 6. How do I move around ? • How do I use the building/product/service ? • The designer should ask again several times taking the view of different people, e.g. a person in a wheelchair or difficulty walking, a blind person, a person with a baby buggy, a person carrying parcels. • If we are to design truly accessible products, we must design for people’s ability. Maarten Wiik, editor European manual for the accessible built environment (1990) aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  6. Example - Poor Inclusive Design • Current commercial design often has limitations • About 97% people registered blind have some vision. • What is the hardest colour contrast to see for partial vision ? • What colour would you guess the bathrooms in a brand new office building will be ? • Answer: White on White * Building Regs. for minimum colour differentiation only introduced in 2005. Not in many modern buildings. aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  7. aIDEAS - Delivering Design Solutions aIDEAS is an innovation junction assisting people develop commercial products with fewer barriers for all, regardless of ability or age. What we do: • Develop & promote innovative ‘universaldesign’ products & services • Apply mass-market design & engineering practices to assistive technology • Leverage innovation & design ingenuity in the assistive technology space for higher & broader usability mass-market products • Broaden marketability & sales • Combine universal design advanced technology solutions with inspiring form • aIDEAS addresses shortfalls in design & usability for physical ability & age • aIDEAS responds withinnovative design solutions aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  8. Martin Sabry - Profile • 1992 B.Eng. IT & Electronic Engineering Systems • 1992 work: Industry & NGO funded next generation R&D -Telecoms / IT / Media technology design & development • 1994 Mountaineering accident - T6/7 spinal injury • 1999 PhD completed - Next generation IT / Media technology design • 1999 work: 1st start-up - Telecoms • 2000 work: IT equipment & services international manufacturers, incl 2nd VC start-up • 2005 - work: aIDEAS Ltd - innovation & product development design consultancy focused on Inclusive Design aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  9. aIDEAS Approach to Inclusive Design • aIDEAS represents a vision of dynamic, customer-focused, inclusive design • The goal is to show, by example and through commercial collaboration, how to innovate technology and develop commercial success for the changing customer age demographics and other market opportunities • The aIDEAS multidisciplinary team supports: • design of cost-effective adaptation solutions • creation of new advanced technology inclusive design solutions • Market gap analysis generates innovative collaborations and networks for designers, innovators, investors and customers aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  10. aIDEAS - Teleservices Example Reduced usage due to shortfalls in demographic design consideration Age • Teleservices can significantly extend independence • Improved usability particularly for upper aged proportion of population reduces barrier to entry • Enables & enhances value-adds associated with functions, e.g. • Shopping - why not associate social community with online shopping? • Graph shows • UK Population, • UK Mobile Phone Subscribers • Expected demographic distribution = Market Penetration x Population aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  11. aIDEAS - Telecare • Telecare can significantly extend independence • Reduce costs delivering higher value living • Risks for independent living can be reduced by simple retro-fit/accessory IT systems at relatively low cost: • Increasing age • Onset dementia e.g. fall alarms, cooker fail-safes, memory-trigger utilities, monitor systems, remote contact • The needs & benefits within individual cases will vary • Efficient design would be a range of tailored & adaptable solutions to the individual needs, from a common set of building blocks. aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions

  12. Inclusive Design - Going Forward • The boundary between ‘not-disabled’ & ‘disabled’ will continue to blur • The need for inclusive design in communities & housing will grow • Extending the opportunities for individuals to live safely independently & semi-independently will become increasingly important • Assistive Technology can bridge the gap • Greater networking & collaborations between designers, manufacturers, Non-profit organisations and customers • One-size-for-all will have significant cost penalty & also defocus usability • Challenge will be to encompass various ages & abilities with distinct end solution deliveries based on sets of simple common & modular product elements & manufacturing • Deliver higher value living at reduced costs aIDEAS — all Inclusive Design Enabling Access Solutions
