  1. Digestive System Chapter 39-2 yes That’s wrong nope

  2. Mouth Function • Mechanical Digestion – breakup of food • Beginning of Chemical Digestion • Saliva from Salivary Gland

  3. Esophagus Function • Rhythmic contraction of muscle rings in wall push food to the stomach (Peristalsis)

  4. Stomach Function • Food mixes together and becomes Chyme • A mixture of food and chemicals • Chemical Digestion (Acid and other chemicals break down food)

  5. Small Intestine Function • Most nutrient absorption takes place here! • Enzymes that work in the small intestine also come from the pancreas and liver. • Basic environment (not acid, base) helps neutralize acid from stomach. • As chyme enters the duodenum: • Carbohydrates and proteins are only partially digested • No fat digestion has taken place

  6. Liver Function • Secretes Bile into beginning of small intestine • Helps to break down fats by preventing their sticking together • Not an Enzyme! • Works like dish-washing soap • The Gall Bladder stores the bile

  7. Chemical Digestion: Fats Like soaping your body! Or the dishes! Figure 23.35

  8. Pancreas Function • Secretes Sodium Bicarbonate • base that neutralizes acid in small intestine • Many chemicals used in digestion come from the pancreas Hidden behind stomach

  9. Large Intestine (Colon) Function • Removes water from undigested material • What happens when not enough water is removed? • Some bacteria live here • Breakdown indigestible carbohydrates (lactose) • Release irritating acids and gases (flatus) • Synthesize B complex vitamins and vitamin K
