THE ORIGINS OF
In 1986, David Martin and Nancy Knowlton were driving through upstate New York when David first described a product idea he'd been working on to Nancy. A year later, SMART was founded.
Originally, the company was the Canadian distributor for a U.S. projector company, and revenue was generated through projector sales. That revenue was directed toward the research and development of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard.
The first interactive whiteboard was introduced by SMART Technologies to the consumer market in 1991. Upon its release, the SMART board became the first interactive board to set the feature of incorporating touch control of computer applications as well as annotation over basic Microsoft Windows programs.
Interactive Whiteboards were introduced as an innovating presentation tool to classrooms at all levels of education, to corporate board rooms and work groups, to training rooms for professional sports coaching, in broadcasting studios and others.
