  2. Overview • What are Interactive Whiteboards? • Why use them in the classroom? • Benefits • Disadvantages • How could we incorporate them into the classroom?

  3. What are interactive whiteboards? • It is essentially a large computer screen that is sensitive to touch. • The content of the computer screen is displayed on the board using a data projector. • Can be used to replace whiteboards and overhead projectors.

  4. Why use Interactive whiteboards in the classroom? • Interactive Whiteboards are an educational resource for the future • Important to promote technological advances to young students – so they are capable when older. • Encourages shy children to voice opinions and become more engaged

  5. Benefits • Ability to save lessons to present to students who are absent. • Allows for effective brainstorming • Takes notes directly into Power point Presentations • Motivates learning in a new forms.

  6. Benefits Cont. • Enables who class to effectively participate in whiteboard presentations • Possible to highlight and annotate key points presented to class • Material can be displayed from a number of sources. E.G. CD-Roms, websites, DVD’s, VHS and television

  7. Disadvantages • Teachers may be unfamiliar with equipment. • Could heighten problems of equity for poorly funded schools. • Computer based technology threatens teachers in the sense that they are likely to lose more and more control over the work they do.

How could we incorporate them into the classroom? • Encourage the use of presentations to motivate and introduce lessons • Demonstrate movie – making techniques for higher grades: extends students knowledge on technology and its capabilities. • Quick and Easy to use – allows more time to be contributed to lessons.
