  2. Session 1

  3. 4th Grade Writing Assessment A Today and tomorrow we will be working on a district writing assessment . This is your chance to show where you are as a writer and demonstrate your writing skills.

  4. 4th Grade Writing Assessment A • Clear EVERYTHING off your desk except: • Pencil • 2-3 sheets of clean paper • You will use this paper for taking notes and planning. Across the top of each sheet, print your name.

  5. Your assignment: In Session 1, you will: • watch a video and take notes, • read an article and take notes, and • answer three research questions In Session 2, you will write an opinion essay recommending a restaurant.

  6. Session 1: Video 5 minutes You will now watch a video. Take notes, because you may want to refer to your notes while writing your essay. The video will be played twice.

  7. Session 1: Article 15 minutes You will now read an article about Wendy’s. Take notes, because you may want to refer to your notes while writing your essay. You may write notes on your article or on your own paper.

  8. Directions: • Use the remaining time to finish reading, if you need to, and answer the questions. • Your answers will help you think about the sources you read and viewed, which will help you write your essay. You may also refer to your notes. • Your teacher will provide you a response sheet.

  9. Questions: 20 minutes • What healthy choices do both restaurants offercustomers? Support your answers using details from the video and the article. • Describe what the video and the article say about fresh, healthy food. Explain your answer with details from both sources. • Think about the amount of fat in the food at Jason’s Deli and Wendy’s. Using details from both sources, explain how each restaurant is different. Your teacher will collect your responses at the end of Session 1 today.

  11. 4th Grade Writing Assessment A Today we will finish working on the district writing assessment . Remember, this is your chance to demonstrate your skills as a writer.

  12. 4th Grade Writing Assessment A • Clear EVERYTHING off your desk except: • Pencil • The article from Session 1 • Notes from Session 1 • Reading Responses from Session 1 • Writing Response sheet that your teacher provides you. • You will use this paper for taking notes and planning.

  13. Session 2: You will now have 70 minutes to: • Review your notes and sources, and • Plan, draft, and revise your essay You may also refer to the answers you wrote in Session 1, but you cannot change those answers.

  14. Your Assignment Imagine that your local newspaper is running a review of one restaurant each week. Choose one of the two restaurants you learned about. State your opinion on why people should eat at that restaurant. Use evidence from the video and the article to help support your opinion on the topic. You may use: • your notes from the article and the video, • your reading response from the article, and • the article

How your essay will be scored • Statement of Purpose/Focus: how well you clearly state your opinions on the topic • Organization:how well your ideas logically flow from the introductionto conclusion using effective transitions and how well you stay on topic throughout the essay • Elaboration of Evidence:how well you provide evidence from sources about your opinions and elaborate with specific information • Language and Vocabulary:how well you effectively express ideas using precise language that is appropriate for your audience and purpose • Conventions:how well you follow the rules of usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling
