Week 4: Investigating Fair trade and Ethical foods Level 8: Evaluate relevant environmental, social, economic, ethical and cultural impacts of technological developments What is Fairtrade? • fair-trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Task: • Research the different types of Fairtrade food products available your local supermarket. Produce a mood board with your findings. • Explain how Fairtrade impacts on the lives of those working in Fairtrade companies and communities • Investigate how un-ethical farming methods can damage the environment http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/ http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/new-products/ethical-choice http://www.ethicalfoodcompany.co.uk/ Year 9 Catering Home works International Food Level 5: Analyse a range of products to establish their own preferences and values as consumers Week 1: Create a collage of bread from around the world • Research the different types of bread available in a supermarket , local bakeries and food outlets. • Produce a chart or poster to show where they originate from. • Choose a country and investigate what kind of bread they eat. • Find a recipe for one the breads you have looked at Research Tips • Visit local bakeries • Go to your a large supermarket like ASDA or Sainsbury • Look at websites • Go to the library and look at recipe books • Ask friends and family for bread recipes • If you go out for a meal investigate what kind of breads they serve • Extension work • In your area find restaurants serving food from as many different countries as you can. • Collect menus and photograph the interior/exterior, with permission. • Try to eat out at least once in a food outlet that serves food from a country you are not familiar with. • Look in local supermarkets and street markets. Investigate the quality and range of manufactured international food available. • Explain the impact that international cuisines have had in your area (range of food outlets, food ranges in supermarkets) • If you are travelling to another country write about the traditional foods from that area. Comment on food available in restaurants, local markets and shops. Find recipes for3 Turkish dishes that appeal to you, include at least one vegetarian dish Compare Turkish fast food with other fast food outlets.
