  3. Why are we here? • To get the best A2 Physics Grade Possible • To teach you as much interesting Physics as possible • And to a lesser extent to set you up with the study & life skills for university & gainful employment

  4. Why are we here? • There are really three purposes to the course: • Knowledge/Content : e.g. know K.E = ½mv2 • Skills : problem solving, graph skills, drive a calculator etc • Practical skills : plan & execute investigations, take measurements, comment on result quality & reach conclusions

  5. Course Outline • Unit 4 – PHYA4 Fields and further mechanics (Mr. Moore) • Unit 5 – One of Units PHA5A, PHA5B, PHA5C, PHA5D (Dr. Poulton) • Written Examination – (75 marks/120 UMS), 1¾ hours • Section A: Nuclear and Thermal Physics – 40 marks • – Compulsory section 4/5 structured questions • Section B: one of the following options. • Each paper has 4/5 structured questions and 35 marks. • A – Astrophysics, B – Medical Physics, C – Applied Physics, D – Turning Points in Physics • 20% of the total A Level marks (Section A 10%, Section B 10%) Available June only • Unit 6 Investigative and practical skills in A2 Physics • PHA6X, Externally Marked Route X – 55 marks • Practical Skills Verification (PSV – teacher verification) • Externally Marked Practical Assignment (EMPA – 55 raw marks) • 10% of the total A Level marks

  7. Text Books • Mr. Burrows has said the specification approved book from Nelson Thornes can be bought in! • Also:- • What textbooks do you already have?

  8. Work Ethic • Nearly at uni now! Focus on self-study, learning, own original work, organisation, prioritisation, self help & being honest to yourself! • Previous Results:- • 8 A’s…4 B’s…1 C…3 D’s… 4 U’s • Physics tends to reward those that work… it is our belief that work ethic has the largest impact on results.

  9. Homework • Homework Equation:- • No Homework = Concern Slip • When will it be set? • Fri Week 1, Mon Week 2, Fri Week 2

  10. Potential pitfalls... • Not taking internal exams seriously, letting things slide • There’s no such thing as a free period! • Letting problems spread...seek help sooner rather than later.

  11. Need Help? • This when I am most likely able to help:- • Week 1: Fri Period 5 • Week 2: Wed P4-5, Thurs P4-5 • Where will I be? • Try the Physics Office or the Staff Room. • Essential that you do not let problems spread... Seek help sooner rather than later

  12. Or Online? • Mr. Moore has set up a website:- • http://ranelaghalevelphysics.wikispaces.com/ • Please add yourself and post on the discussion thread for Unit 5 - I want to see if it notifies me of this. • Resources will be added as we go along including the power point slides.
