  2. Look back into your printed notes as we go through these different words and meanings Point of view? What is it… 1st- I went to the mall last night. 2nd- You wake up everyday on the wrong side of the bed! 3rd- He only likes ice cream cake. 3rd limited- Johnny was very nervous as he walked into the room. 3rd omniscient- Everyone at the party was happy. (Miss Sardo reads examples, I take down right answers (1-6) in my notes)

  3. Author’s Perspective What is it? Using clues to determine how the author feels based on how he/she portrays characters and events. Ex: Mary was all smiles after she opened her birthday gifts. She screamed with pure joy as she opened what her aunts and uncles had bought for her. In notes - Author’s Perspective 1. What is the author’s perspective of Mary? 2. How do you know?

  4. Dialogue What is it? • The words characters speak… (a conversation) • This includes quotation marks! Ex: “I’m sooo hungry!” Emily cried as she rubbed her belly. Or When his teacher asked him if he cheated on his test, Jim replied, “Of course not Miss Sardo!”

  5. Dialogue… • Quotation marks • Speaker tag (what the speaker says) • Correct punctuation • Put said to bed • Action/phrase after said • ? Or ! Inside quotation marks = NO period Example— “He isn’t coming anymore right?” asked Ryan. Or “I’d love some candy!” Pam answered excitedly. • , = period at end Example-- “Erin waited for the bus for almost an hour,” replied her mother as she was on the phone with the school principal.

  6. Let’s do a few examples… 1. He’s so cute said Sam as she pet the puppy 2. Kim replied NO WAY! with an angry look on her face 3. I do not want to go to school today screamed Mark as he stomped down the stairs 4. When did you say the movie starts asked Zach with a confused look on her face 5. I love ice cream sundaes squealed Paige 6. His exact words were No thank you when John was asked if he’d like some asparagus.

  7. Tone (of voice) What is it? The emotion behind the dialogue (how the character says something or sounds when he/she talks) • Ex: Oh my gosh, I love it." • What tone of voice is used here? • How do you know?

  8. "Oh my gosh!!! I love it." she remarked. • What is the tone? • Say this line to a partner using the appropriate tone in your voice.

  9. "Oh my gosh,I love it," she squeaked. • What is the tone? • What could be the situation here?

  10. Once in a while, my mother buys the perfect gift for Christmas. She seems to just know exactly what I want and it's sheer brilliance. "Here you go honey, I hope you like it," mom says with a sly grin as I rip open the paper. "Oh my gosh!!!! I love it!" I squeak as I pull the cell phone from the box. "I figured you were old enough for your own phone. I'm glad you like it," she laughed. "I gotta text Jamie! She'll flip!" I screamed as I ran up the stairs. "Just be sure to take care of it," she yelled up after me, chuckling to herself. What helped you understand what the tone of voice was for each piece of dialogue?

  11. My little brother has always been known for his artwork. He seems to think his canvas is anything he chooses and it's difficult to regulate what he creates his "artwork" on. He's pretty talented though for a 4-year-old. "Bryan, do you want to see my new drawing? I did it just for you! It took me all day long!" he exclaimed as he pulled me up the stairs to our bedroom. I walked in to his markers sprawled all over the floor and my favorite guitar in the middle of the carpet. I glanced at my brother and his face was full of sincere pride. "Oh my gosh, I love it," I remarked. What is the tone of the last line? What in the story shows the tone of this line?

  12. What can you add to this line to create a confused tone? Make it obvious to the reader."Why didn't she just put the groceries in the trunk?"Now make the reader infer the confused tone.

  13. With a partner:in "Eleven"- choose a scene with dialogue and determine the tone. Be prepared to act it out.Independently:Create a page of dialogue using tag lines, actions and context clues. Be creative! Start your dialogue with this line: " You are never going to believe what happened."

  14. TOD:List two ways a reader can figure out the tone of voice used in dialogue?
