  1. Pitkin County Resource Recovery DepartmentSolid Waste Management Strategy Ideas for Today and Tomorrow

  2. Vision Statement • Resource Recovery Purpose and Mission: • Pitkin County Resource Recovery protects the environment through the education of our community, diversion of recoverable materials, and proper waste management.

  3. Goal and Objective • Extend life of landfill thru diversion • Diversion of recoverables protects the environment in several ways: • hazardous materials diversion prevents pollution • Diversion and recycling promotes natural resource conservation • protecting airspace is extending landfill lifecycle • longer landfill life prevents costs of exporting waste

  4. 2003 Landfill Volume Total Airspace Consumption – 116,435 CY 319 CY per day Diversion Data Recycling – about 30,000 CY Composting – about 30,000 CY HHW/Elec./Metal – about 200 CY Aggregates – 100,000 CY Total consumption without diversion – 276,635 CY 757 CY per day

  5. What that means to the Landfill Lifespan Total permitted airspace – 5.5M CY Total consumed – 2.7M CY Total available – 2.7M CY 2.7M / 319 CY per day = about 23years 2.7M / 757 CY per day = about 9years

  6. Today’s Situation

  7. How Did We Get Here? • Volume and Weight Based Tipping Fees • Differential Tipping Fees • Source Separation

  8. Screened 1.5” Rock Boulders Compost Coarse Mulch Fine Mulch

  9. What’s next? • Increase awareness and product sales • Obtain more nitrogenous material for overflowing carbon material • Develop land use initiative to compel use of recycled aggregates in development

  10. What’s next Post-closure? • Master Plan for Landfill mentions some possibilities: • Waste processing facility • Active (organized) recreation areas • Develop Comprehensive Solid Waste Master Plan with Community Involvement

  11. Thank You! Chris Hoofnagle – Solid Waste Manager Pitkin County (970) 923-3487 chrisho@co.pitkin.co.us
