  1. The MP3 from 2013 onKick-off meeting Motivation: Need for a decision centre on powering and electrical aspects for the LHC superconducting magnet circuits and powering system. The MP3 (LHC Magnet circuits, Powering and Performance Panel) performs analysis on issues that require detailed investigation, especially with the purpose of increasing the long-term protection and performance of the circuits. Arjan Verweij, 30 Jan 2013 Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  2. Proposed members: Bernhard Auchmann (MPE) Mateusz Bednarek (MPE) Zinour Charifoulline (MPE) Per Hagen (MSC) Michele Modena (MSC) Sandrine le Naour (MSC) Ivan Romera (MPE) Jens Steckert (MPE) EzioTodesco (MSC) Arjan Verweij (MPE, chair) Gerard Willering (MSC, scient. secr.) Daniel Wollmann (MPE) ex officio: Andrzej Siemko (MPE) Ruediger Schmidt (MPE) Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  3. The past • MPP (Main ring Magnet Performance Panel):(30-40 persons) • https://project-mpp-committee.web.cern.ch/project-mpp-committee/MPP_Committee.htm • Sept 2006-Aug 2008 • With task forces for HWC and GMPMA (Global PM Analysis) • minutes: http://indico.cern.ch/categoryDisplay.py?categId=1219 • nMPP MP3 • https://espace.cern.ch/mp3/default.aspx • Feb 2009-Dec 2010 • Then continued only as a ‘MP3 CCC’ piquetservice (9 persons). • 113 issues from May 2010-Mar 2011 • http://issues/secure/Dashboard.jspa • De-blocking the machine is now tackled by ‘MPE piquet’, ‘COMS’, and about 8 experts on best effort. • http://issues.cern.ch/browse/TE-MPE-COMS Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  4. Mandate for the new MP3 • Identify, track and document all important issues and non-conformities related to the superconducting magnet system. • First priorities are issues that appear during operation, and that are mainly observed by the COMS team, MPE-piquet or OP during beam operation and then transferred to MP3. • Second priorities are past issues since the first HWC in 2008, especially those that are still open, that will be documented in the same way as new issues. Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  5. Mandate cntd • If needed, give recommendations for future operation, or for additional testing (in the machine and/or in SM18). • Report to TE-TM for all critical magnet circuit issues, in particular involving inter-group responsibilities. • If needed, open and close non-conformities. • Assist to the definition and revision of procedures for the powering of all main ring magnet circuits. • Set-up and run the CCC support team during the “hardware commissioning” campaign. • If not enough expertise is available by the members themselves, then seek held/advise from other people (mainly from the MPE, MSC and EPC groups). • For larger issues, separate working groups / task forces may have to be formed. (CSCM, diode lead issue, 13 kA defective shunts) Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  6. High priority for coming months Mo 11 Feb 6 AM – We 13 Feb 6 AM: quench tests (48 hours non-stop) See presentation of Mariusz Sapinski in MPP (25/1/2013). We need a few people to follow this (Bernhard, Mateusz, Daniel, Ezio, ?). 13 Feb - 28 Feb: powering tests, 12 days (no weekend), 7-23h. So in total 24 ‘shifts’ of 8 hr. Main purpose: bring all circuits (except mains) to 7 TeV equivalent. We need about 4-6 people to analyse and sign tests. Go through the NC’s of all circuits, and possibly add additional tests. Bernhard, Michele, Ezio, Sandrine, Zinour, Ivan, ? (+help from Mirko) A few 600 A thresholds will be changed before starting the powering tests (definition, EDMS doc, implementation). Jens, Bernhard, Arjan March/April:CSCM (preparation & tests & analysis) CSCM team has already members from MP3 in (Jens, Zinour, Daniel, Gerard, Arjan, +…). In total about 40 tests. Each test has to be signed off by MP3. Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  7. Other work to do in 2013 Create a proper environment to document past and future issues, non-conformities, minutes, etc. Note that MP3 issues might be big, and possibly continuously evolving in time (monitoring etc.). Does it make sense to have common approach with COMS issue tracking? Ivan, … (+help from MPE-MS) Go through all MPP/MP3 issues from the past and set up a list of those issues that would fall in the mandate of the new MP3. (also check COMS issue tracking, QPS and MP3 logbooks, old MPP/MP3 minutes, MTF, …) Michele, Sandrine, Zinour, … Create a database containing all quenches of all magnets in the machine, including quenches from reception tests, HWC campaigns, operation. Per, Gerard, …. (+help from Vittorio, MPE-MS) Define a tool so that we can compare any event with events from the past on the same circuit. Zinour, Ivan, … (+help from EN-ICE-MTA) Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  8. Other questions that will come up before HWC in 2014. Monitoring How to use as best as possible the new voltage-to-ground feelers? How to monitor the soundness of the quench heaters? How do we continue monitoring the 13 kA splice resistances? Do we need long-term autom. monitoring of the number of heater discharges per magnet? Do we need long-term autom. monitoring of the diodes and/or diode leads? Protection/thresholds What about the sunglasses on the RB circuit? Would it be safer in the long-term to reduce the heater voltage on the IPD’s, IPQ’s? Could we increase thresholds in some of the 600 A circuits in order to reduce spurious trips? In which circuits can we remove the EE, or reduce REE and hence reduce the ELQA voltage? Should we (as MP3) be involved in protection issues of magnet upgrades (HiLumi)? Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  9. Other questions that will come up before HWC in 2014. HWC Should we add/remove tests for the HWC in 2014? Can we further automatize the analysis of the HWC tests? Beam related Do the beam-induced quench tests correspond to what we expect? Do we need more beam-induced quench tests? Why did the 120 A correctors in IT.L2 die? (urgent, before powering tests in Feb 2013) Other What should be the decay time constant for the RQ circuits? How can we explain the training in the dipoles? Can we define some kind of training protocol for the 600 A circuits? Should we make a list of ‘exceptions’? (different heater layout, different threshold, Rpar not present, …) ……………….. Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  10. Organisation • In coming 3-4 months: 1 meeting/week • Until HWC in 2014: 2 meetings/month • (Day/time to be decided with help of small Doodle) • Representation in the various task forces, committees, working groups with links to magnet circuit performance&protection: • LMC (Ezio, Daniel, Arjan) MPP (Daniel, Ezio, Arjan) • BLM threshold working group (Mateusz, Daniel, Arjan) SMACC (Sandrine) Diode task force (Gerard, Mateusz, Zinour, Arjan) QTSWG (Daniel, Mateusz, Arjan) • Task force splices (Sandrine, Gerard, Arjan, Zinour) • Each issue can typically be treated by a few MP3 members (possibly with help from other experts). • Store all info (exp. data, calculations, pictures, excel files, …) • Presentation in MP3 meeting • Final document (EDMS) including conclusion/recommendation • Possibly presentation in TE-TM Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013

  11. Next meeting Define CCC ‘shifts’ for HWC in February. How to decide when to stop training during HWC (for IT, IPQ, IPD, 600 A, 80-120 A ? (Michele, Sandrine) New thresholds for some 600 A circuits. (Bernhard, Jens) Beam induced quench tests for 11-13 Feb. (Mateusz, Daniel) Which NC’s cause constraints for the powering tests - ramp to nominal. (Ezio, Gerard) Proposal for MP3 website or similar. (all) Arjan Verweij, MP3 meeting, 30 Jan 2013
