  1. DAEDALUS Delivery of AErosol proDucts for Assimilation and environmentaL USe Peter van Velthoven18 November 2003

  2. Goals To advise on optimum use of aerosol in-situ, ground-based, and satellite remote sensing data to meet the users’ needs (GMES) To make proposals for aerosol monitoring as part of the European capacity to be established for GMES To develop the methodologies necessary for delivering operational aerosol products. To provide some specific aerosol data and information

  3. Specific objectives • To compile existing aerosol data relevant to tropospheric and stratospheric aerosol monitoring • To foster the dialogue between users and providers of aerosol data, and assess the users’ needs at the European level in terms of tropospheric and stratospheric aerosol properties • To match the available aerosol data products with the information needed by users • To make proposals for a sustainable monitoring infrastructure in order to meet users’ needs, including an assessment of the scientific, technical, and institutional efforts needed, in particular regarding operational products • To improve methodologies for making optimal use of satellite data and for assimilation in regional&global CTMs and NWPs.

  4. Work packages WP1: Matching users’ needs to availability and quality of aerosol data (G. de Leeuw, TNO-FEL) WP2: Extension of an aerosol network of sun photometers and network sustainability (O. Boucher, LOA) WP3: Database and user interface for stratospheric aerosol (D. Fussen, IASB) WP4: Development of level-4 aerosol data (G. Myhre, NILU) WP5: Assimilation of aerosol data in transport models (P. van Velthoven, KNMI) Coordination: O. Boucher, LOA Other partners: TNO-MEP, IES-JRC, Un. Of Evora

  5. Results WP2: Photons network Continuous measurements of aerosol optical depth Capo Verde station

  6. Mean profile of mode radius from SAGE II WP3: climatology of stratospheric aerosol 50-60°N 50-60°S

  7. WP4: Inter-comparison of aerosol climatology's from satellites

  8. WP5: Aerosol data assimilation systems
