  1. Station 1Daedalus and Icarus EQ: How do we analyze theme in a literary text? How does a writer develop the conflict in a literary text?

  2. Materials • Springboard Workbook • Notebook Paper • Pen or Pencil • 5 Different colored markers

  3. Instructions • In this station, you will be exploring two key concepts: • Theme • Conflict and Plot development

  4. Turn to page 52 in the Springboard workbook. • Fill out the advice chart in your workbook. • In general, do you think you learn best from other people’s advice or from your own experience? • On separate paper, explain with an example from your own life. • Be sure to analyze the consequences of taking or not taking the advice.

  5. Freytag Pyramid • Turn to page 57 and read over the elements of the plot structure. • As you read, you will be analyzing the story for how the plot progresses.

  6. Daedalus and Icarus • Read the Myth of Daedalus and Icarus together. • Everyone must read in your group.

  7. Conflict Development After you have read the passage: • Return to the story to mark the text by highlighting parts of the story that correspond to the five plot elements. Mark each plot element with a different colored highlighter. • Then, summarize each of the plot elements on their plot chart on page 57.

  8. Theme • With your group, discuss the questions and concepts about theme on this page. • Record your answers on your notebook paper. • Then, complete the writing prompt at the bottom of page 58. Your response needs to be 20 sentences.
