Relevance of Green Skills in the Workplace to Just Transition • Themes: Developing high performing workplaces and tackling skills gap and shortages • Green skills: understanding the importance of cutting Carbon emissions • The Government has committed to reduce emissions 80% by 2050 (34% by 2020). Half of all UK Carbon emission comes from work activity • Savings through low cost and cost-free measures (10%-20%) but key is staff need to be involved

Proposals – 3 stage approach • 1 day training for staff reps and management • 3 day training in environmental awareness raising for staff and representatives • Wider workforce:  training tailored to address specific behavioural skills (including awareness raising), technical skills and knowledge of the organisation’s climate and/or resource efficiency objectives • Identifying areas where we can support ‘greening’ the workplace, we can encourage colleagues to take part in making their workplace a better place for all.

  4. Euston Tower • Almost 2,000 staff • Employers: HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC – central government), Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS – arm’s length from government) and private sector business • Unions: PCS, FDA, ARC (FDA in HMRC) • Strong union footprint • Union Membership extends to senior managers • Existing Green Champions in the workforce • Record of joint union work on learning

One day training format • Environmental Definitions: Groups developed definitions of “Climate Change” and “Sustainable Development”. • Roles and Responsibilities of the Green Rep: Participants were asked to explain the Green Rep role to others. The TUC “Go Green at Work Handbook” was used in support. • Raising Awareness in the Workplace: Groups identified possible methods of communication with other members of staff, key messages, barriers and potential solutions. • Workplace Audits: This practical activity helped the participants have a better insight into this vital role and identify environmental issues within the workplace. • Action Plans: Participants were asked to consider what they have learnt and to make an action plan. • Attendance: Each workshop involved both union and management. This was very useful to enable co-operation and open lines of direct communication. Workshops also attended by private sector.

  6. Work in progress • Ensure senior management and union buy-in to the project, tailoring to the situation at Euston Tower and at other workplaces • Hold the three day training course and engage Green Reps, staff and management through wider work
