Observing Matter • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. • Mass is the amount of matter that makes up an object. • Volume is the amount of space that matter takes up. • An Atom is the smallest particle of matter that has the properties of that matter. • A molecule is a single particle of matter that is made up of two or more atoms joined together.

  5. Three States of Matter • Solids • A solid has a shape of its own. • It has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space. • The particles in a solid are arranged in a neat, regular order that gives the solid its definite shape.

  6. Liquids a. A liquid takes the shape of its container and takes up a definite amount of space. • The particles in a liquid can move easily from place to place but they stay close together. • Gases • A gas has no definite shape and takes up no definite amount of space. • The particles in a gas are not arranged in any pattern and they do not stay close together.

  8. The Metric System • The Metric System is a system of measurement based on multiples of 10. • Length is measured in meters. • Mass is measured in grams. -Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on an object. -Weight can vary but mass is constant. • Volume is measured in liters.

  10. Physical Properties • Physical Properties are characteristics of matter that can be observed and that tell you what the substance is. • Color, Shape, Texture (feel), Luster (shine), and Density (float) are examples of physical properties.

  11. Chemical Properties • Chemical Properties are characteristics of matter that tell how one substance reacts with another substance. • Chemical Properties are often related to how matter reacts with air, heat and water. b. Examples of chemical properties are the ability to cook, burn, rust, explode, and tarnish.
