  3. First Choice Topic Nanotechnology, Materials, Production Technologies, Call 1 • Advanced Wood-Based Composites and their Production Ecological and safe machining of wood-based composites. A promising and innovative technology in terms of : • Safety, • Operator's health, • Tool life increment, • Parts cleanliness, • Machine performance, • Machine and fixturing maintenance, etc... Page 3

  4. Key Competencies and skills (I) SEPMAC Project (FP5): Development of a New Integrated System for Ecological High Speed Machining using Internal Chip Evacuation. Project Goal: Full chip removal through tool and spindle, elimination of chips from working space • Advantages of the new technology: • Safe and clean working area. • No operator’s health hazard. • Clean and dry workpieces, do not require further cleaning. • Immediate chip processing. • Flexible machining / less tools required. • Compatible with tool-shank standards (HSK, ISO). • Simple- do not require additional devices. The promising results encouraged the research group to explore new materials and applications Page 4

  5. Key Competencies and skills (II) • New Materials: • Interested aerospace companies (AIRBUS, EADS, GAMESA, CASA) for applying this technology on CFRCs materials. • Mould makers interested on production electrodes made in Graphite. • First successful trials made on machining Wood. Without aspiration With aspiration Page 5
