  2. CARE OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Get regular check ups • Bathe/shower regularly • Wear protective equipment • Perform regular self-examinations • Practice abstinence

  3. SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES • Chlamydia – a bacterial infection that cause a discharge from the penis and burning sensation when urinating. Can cause damage to reproductive health • Gonorrhea - a bacterial infection that cause a discharge from the penis and burning sensation when urinating. Can cause damage to reproductive health • Syphilis – a bacterial infection that first appears with a painless reddish sore at the site of infection. If untreated can spread and damage other organs • Genital Herpes –a virus that causes blister-like sores in the genital area. The virus remains in the body for life.

PROBLEMS OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Inguinal hernia – a separation of tissue thatallows a part of the intestine to push into the abdominal wall near the top of the scrotum • Sterility – the inability to reproduce. • Testicular cancer - most often occurs in males between the ages of 14 and 40 • Prostate problems – an enlarged prostate can be a result of an infection, a tumor, or age related problems. An enlarged prostate can cause problems in the urethra

The Structures of the Male Reproductive System External male Reproductive Organs • Testes – also called testicles, 2 small glands that produce sperm • Also produce testosterone, the male hormone • Scrotum – an external skin sac that contains the testes • Help regulate the temperature of the sperm • Penis – a tube shaped organ that extends from the trunk of the body just above the testes

The Structures of the Male Reproductive System • Internal Male Reproductive Organs • Epidiymis – a large coiled tube where sperm matures and is stored • Vas Deferens – tubes that extend from each epidiymis to the urethra • Seminal vesicle – produces a fluid that nourishes the sperm • Prostate gland – secretions neutralize the acid in the lining of the • Urethra • Cowper’s gland – produce a fluid that the sperm can live in • Urethra – the passageway that sperm and urine can leave the male body
