Introduction • 2010: end the network display period outlined by Biblioteques de Barcelona Plan (1998-2010) • From 1998 to 2010, we have achieved: • from 18 to 36 libraries operating and 6 in construction • from 11.038 m2 to 49.665 m2 of area • from 592 to 1.566 hours of weekly opening • from 0 to 27 Multimedia spaces • from 0 to 37 websites (36+1) • from 1.362.840 to 6.850.000 visits (projection based on the growth tendency) • from 13% to 45% of registered citizens • to become the municipal service best appreciated by citizens

Presentation • Biblioteques de Barcelona has suffered substantial changes, but there have also been huge technological and social transformations in the local and international fields • Now we need to establish the goals for the period 2010-2020, with the necessary flexibility and adaptability to face a constant changing environment • With the contribution of prominent professionals from Catalonia and from the rest of Spain and Europe in the fields of libraries, architecture, sociology, publishing world...

  4. The process • The process to orientate the actions for the period 2010-2020 will have two sections that complement each other: • Realization of a Professional Conference, from 13th to 15th October 2010 • The futures of the public library • Development and composition of a document that settles the main subjects of work for the future (equipments and services), starting from the evaluation of the task already done, which will be presented in December 2010 • Biblioteques de Barcelona: 10 years +. New challenges, New commitments.

Stipulating in 2010 the orientations for the future (2020) • Changes in the new context of digital society. Risk elements: generational and social. New knowledge supports • Changes in the city. Priorities in municipal policies and evolution of the equipments map. • The new municipal organization (Barcelona 2.0) • Evolution of the library service in the last years • Need of new equipments in the territory, depending on the urban and/or social transformations. Some improved actions and extension of the existing spaces. 2. In 2010.
