  1. What is technology? • Technology is the scientific methods people use to improve their surroundings. • It is also a knowledge of using tools and machines to do tasks efficiently. Look around this classroom and give five examples.

  2. Computers • Desktops • Laptops • Cars • i-Pods • Airplanes

  3. How do we use computers? • To learn • To perform tasks • Automation (Speed) • To Communicate • Music

  4. Communication • Cell phones • E-mail • Television • Internet • Videogames

  5. Transportation • Bicycles • Motorcycles • Automobiles • Buses • Trains • Planes • Rockets

  6. SPACE TECHNOLOGY • In the second half of the 20th century, humans created enough technology to leave the surface of the Earth and explore space.

  7. Ancient (Early) Technology • The history of technology is at least as old as humanity. Some primitive forms of tools have been discovered with almost every find of ancient human remains dating from the time of primitive humans. • The earliest technologies turned easily found natural resources (such as rock, wood and other vegetation, bone and other animal byproducts) into simple tools. • Tools • Weapons Flint spear, circa 100,000 BC

  8. The Wheel • The wheel was invented circa 4,000 BCE. This artifact was found in present day Iran. • The flag of India has a wheel in its center.

  9. And what perhaps (maybe) is the earliest example of technology? The use, and then mastery, of fire (circa 1,000,000 - 500,000 BCE was a turning point in the technological evolution of humankind, affording a simple energy source with many profound uses. Perhaps the first use of fire beyond providing heat was the preparation of food. This enabled a significant increase in both vegetable and animal sources of food, while greatly reducing perishability (being able to spoil). • Human’s use of FIRE

  10. Modern Technology:The Integrated Circuit • All computers contain these circuits • What do they look like? • Of what do they remind you?

  11. Where in the World is PS 119?
