  1. SPSC Cogne IX ………………….. Villars 2004 Sep 22-28 Review present & future FT physics consider possibility & options compatible with long term CERN plans at CERN call for informal, unbinding “Statements of Intent” ….. SPSC 27 Jan

  2. a step of our long term strategy … ECFA … BENE/HIPPI … DS influence CERN R&D choices (mid 2006) propose a new Neutrino Complex for its agenda make it a credible option by end 2008 More immediately campaign for a new high intensity Proton Complex …. SPL and beyond … persuade CERN to restore a little kernel activity ablo to cluster EU labs around it re-propose Workshop in 05 ie produce new fresh work for an updated COMPREHENSIVE “BOOK” end 05

  7. Study of the Physics of Neutrinos (Boris Kayser at the Superbeam Working Group meeting, Jan. 29-30, ‘04) Sponsored by the American Physical Society Divisions of — • Particles and Fields • Nuclear Physics • Astrophysics • Physics of Beams Organizational meeting was held December 2003. www.neutrinooscillation.org/studyaps/ Final report will be completed August 2004.

  8. The Purposes of the Study — Primary Purpose — To move towards a coherent strategy for answering the open neutrino questions — a clear, unified plan that funding sources can easily consider and promote. To this end, we will— • Identify the most important questions • Evaluate the physics reach of the proposed ways of answering them • Examine how different facilities and experiments complement each other • Create a decision tree • Determine an intelligent sequence of facilities and experiments

  9. Targets Organizing Committee and Working Group Leaders hold Mid-Course Correction Meeting April 1-2 or 4-5. Purpose: To assess the progress of the Working Groups and to coordinate their activities. Entire Study holds three-day Final General Meeting during June 23-28 in Aspen. By the end of this meeting: • The working group findings • Final cross-working-group coordination • Preliminary study conclusions

  10. We should be able to make a very strong case for a robust, exciting neutrino program. Both DOE and NSF have made it clear that they will be listening to us. Good Luck!

  11. Options for neutrino physics NB: beam + detector configurations Conventional beamp decay channel… m (0.1-1% e) SuperBeam, if MW power ……. need Very Large Detector (water C, Li-Ar) the same as p-decay 50-500 Ktons ie new lab n o v e l b e a m s Neutrino Factorym storage ring ….. m & e manipulate & (& m accelerator complex! ) accelerate needs Large Magnetic Detector n parents ! (SuperMINOS, Li-Ar in B ) 30-100 Ktons LNGS ! new lab ? BetaBeamb storage ring … pure e (& EU accelerator complex)detectors same as SuperBeams NB : p m b possible, in all cases, for CP, T & CPT studies

  13. Any option relies on a new powerful EU p-driver !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPL basics Study group since 1999  design of a Superconducting Proton Linac (H-, 2.2 GeV).  higher brightness beams into the PS for LHC  intense beams (4 MW) for neutrino and radioactive ion physics CERN 2000-012 NB Rapid Cycling Synchrotrons (RCS) also an option: HARP !

  14. Benefit to approved physics programme • Need for higher beam performance (brightness*, intensity) to: • Reduce the LHC filling time, • Improve the reliability in the generation of the ultimate beam actually foreseen for LHC, • Increase the proton flux onto the CNGS target, • Increase the proton flux to ISOLDE, • Prepare for further upgrades of the LHC performance beyond the present ultimate. Higher integrated luminosity More events Upgrade Upgrades beyond ultimate * For protons, brightness can only degrade along a cascade of accelerators Þ Any improvement has to begin at the low energy (linac) end courtesy of R. Garoby
