  1. “Señor del Rescate” 2004 “Señor del Rescate” Painting Parrroquia de San Francisco de Asís Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán, Mexico

  2. “Señor del Rescate” 2004 Origins and Growth • In the late 19th century, the church sacristan, Guadalupe Estrada, found an old painting of Christ in the convent storehouse. He offered a prayer to end a measles epidemic in Tzintzuntzan and promised that he would create a fiesta in its honor if the epidemic stopped. He finally convinced the local priest to permit the fiesta. The first celebration was held in the first decade of the 20th century. The fiesta quickly became an important regional event and soon replaced the October 4th Fiesta of the patron Saint (San Francisco de Asís) as the principal “function” of the year. • When the Church was being persecuted in the late 1920s, the local municipal authorities sustained what had become a very important commercial as well as religious function.

  3. “Señor del Rescate” 2004 A “Movable Feast” The Fiesta occurs each year on the Tuesday a week before Carnival, although the religious elements begin more than a week earlier. In effect, the “Señor del Rescate” fiesta has replaced Carnival in the local liturgical calendar as the major event before the penitential season of Lent.

  4. “Señor del Rescate” The ancient capital of the Purépecha empire, birthplace of Evangelization in western Mexico and first site of the Bishopric of Michoacán, Tzintzuntzan joyfully celebrates the annual festival in honor of the “Señor del Rescate.” (from the poster for 2004)
