  4. Tuesday Voc 1. Absolute - A word free from limitations of qualifications (“best,” “all”) • Ex: MHS is the best high school ever. • Ex: All girls are bad drivers. 2. Ad hominem argument - An argument attacking an individual’s character rather than his or her position on an issue

Allegory-A literary work in which characters, objects, or actions represent abstraction (abstract ideas) Ex: Pilgrim’s Progress – Christian journey Ex: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe – Asland as Christ Ex: Young Goodman Brown – physical journey through woods = spiritual journey

Thurs Voc • 6. archetype -a detail, image, or character type that occurs frequently in literature and myth and is thought to appeal in a universal way to the unconscious and to evoke a response • Research shows that people who had no contact with each other at all had passed down stories whose characters and events were strikingly similar. • Psychoanalyst Carl Jung introduced a theory that humans have a collective unconscious, which means that there is a store of information that we, as humans, somehow hold. This collection of information includes archetypes, or symbolic figures.
