  8. Paleo (12,000-8,000 BCE) ~ first humans in Georgia (13,250 years ago) ~ Culture: nomadic hunters and gatherers ~ Food: followed large game (mastodons and giant sloths). Then later deer when big animals died out ~ Weapons: Clovis point and spears ~ Shelter: made from animal skins which they moved from place to place as they hunted

Archaic (8,000-1,000 BCE) ~ descended from the Paleo people ~ Culture: nomadic hunters and gatherers with developed technology (primitive pottery) ~ Food: hunted deer and later fish when they developed hooks and nets ~ Weapons: Atlatl (spear throwing mechanism) ~ Shelter: made from animal skins which they moved from place to place as they hunted

Woodland (1,000 BCE-750 CE) ~ first stationary people ~ Culture: set up small villages and were the first “mound builders” ~ Food: farming (especially corn) and continued to hunt deer but began to hunt smaller animals such as rabbits ~ Weapons: bow and arrow allowed for hunting smaller and faster game ~ Shelter: homes made of wood, leaves, and tree bark

  20. Mississippian (800-1600 CE) ~ Most complex prehistoric culture in Georgia. First to encounter Europeans. Culture ended due to infections from European diseases which the Native Americans had no immunity against. ~ Culture: “mound builders” who organized themselves as a chiefdom (elites and commoners) ~ Food: large scale farmers who traded throughout North America ~ Weapons: bow and arrow allowed for hunting smaller and faster game ~ Shelter: mound towns
