  2. Harvard UAEM Timeline 2007 – Meeting w/Larry Schlossman (not a big player in the Harvard OTD), who declines invitation to attend an event. January 2009 – Harvard UAEM meets with, gains support of School of Public Health Dean Julio Frenk. March 2009 – Harvard UAEM publishes an op-ed in the Harvard Crimson, eliciting a thoughtful reply from OTD Chief Isaac Kohlberg in which he emphasized Harvard's mission for the global good. May 2009 – Harvard UAEM delivers a formal, written request to Provost Hyman, signed by 11 student groups, 24 faculty, and a multitude of students, to establish a Committee with a mandate to weigh and establish a definitive, written global access policy.

  3. Harvard UAEM Timeline, cont. May 21, 2009 – Harvard UAEM meets with Provost Hyman and OTD chief Isaac Kohlberg and learn of plans to organize the Multi-University Agreement. June 9, 2009 – University Roundtable meeting happens at Harvard – UAEM given a 30 minute presentation. September 21-26, 2009 – Harvard UAEM launches Say Yes to Drugs campaign, gather 1000 petition signatures.

Say Yes to Drugs – Meeting with Harvard OTDOctober 19, 2009 • Harvard UAEM learns that Harvard patents in BRIC countries and will continue to do so • OTD says they believe they “deserve the revenue” from these countries • Say BRIC patents can provide leverage for greater access • Question: “Will Harvard’s practices change after signing these principles?” • Answer: “No, these principles embody our practices.” • Sublicensing: infectious vs. chronic, non-communicable diseases

  7. Say Yes to Drugs – BRIC or TreatOctober 30, 2009 “On behalf of UAEM Say Yes to Drugs, our Halloween gift to is this BRIC or Treat cake (hand over cake). Our message today is that 80% of deaths from chronic diseases like diabetes are in developing countries. That's 28 million people who die from chronic diseases in the Third World every year. Harvard patents technologies for chronic, non-communicable diseases in BRIC countries without a policy to ensure generic access for poor people. Poor people are dying of chronic disease and Harvard’s innovations will do nothing to help them. In the time that it's taken us to deliver us this short message, over 40 impoverished people have died of TREATABLE chronic disease. BRIC offers a solution to fill theirprescriptions in developing countries, and we urge you to make Harvard do its part to ensure generic production in BRIC countries for poor people suffering from chronic diseases. BRIC or TREAT!”

Say Yes to Drugs – Meeting with Provost HymanNovember 9, 2009 • Asked him for two things • To find a solution for Syndexa – agree publicly to not assert the patent in India • To implement an independent committee of students and faculty who review TTO decisions to patent in BRIC countries and ensure we have an access policy
