  2. Freud's Model of the Psyche • Mind divided into three parts • Id • Superego • Ego • Each has a specific function • Not physiological

  3. ID • Controls our desires, basic drives, and instincts • Selfish and self-gratifying • Operates on the pleasure principle • No organization or collective will • Contains everything present at birth (instincts) • Like the mind of a newborn child • Acts on impulse and is amoral

  4. SUPEREGO • Controls our ideals, spiritual goals, and morality – aims for perfection • Opposes the id • Considered our conscience • Attempts to act in a socially acceptable manner • Punishes bad behavior by making us feel guilty

  5. EGO • Controls our reason, intellect, memory, and caution • Purpose is to control the id • Horse and rider • Carry out actions • Employs defense mechanisms • Organize our thoughts and make sense of the world
