  1. GOIN' ON A PUDDLE WALK

  2. our weather yesterday... Our Country's Weather Today

  3. and today, we have... puddles!!!

  4. PUDDLES HAVE MANY DIFFERENT SIZES AND SHAPES!

  5. puddle terms circumference THE DISTANCE ALL THE WAY AROUND diameter THE DISTANCE ACROSS THE WIDEST PART depth HOW DEEP IT IS

  6. HOW DO WE MEASURE A PUDDLE?

  7. CIRCUMFERENCE THE DISTANCE ALL THE WAY AROUND THE PUDDLE WE WILL USE STRING TO MEASURE THIS, AND THEN USE A YARDSTICK TO MEASURE THE LENGTH OF STRING

  8. DIAMETER THE DISTANCE ACROSS THE WIDEST PART WE WILL USE A YARDSTICK TO MEASURE THIS IN FEET

  9. DEPTH HOW DEEP IT IS WE WILL USE A RULER TO MEASURE THIS IN INCHES

  10. and now....we're going on a puddle walk! • Things you will need: • A long piece of string • A yardstick • A ruler • Worksheet • A pencil • Scissors

  11. WHAT WE'LL DO • Make a group of 2 with the person sitting next to you • When we go outside, we will measure one puddle together as a class • You and your partner will then find your own puddle on the playground • Together, you will measure the circumference, diameter and depth of your puddle • Make sure to write down your measurements on your worksheet!!

  12. Using your materials, take measurements of: • The circumference by laying the string all the way around the puddle and then using your yardstick to measure the part of the string you used • The diameter by holding the yardstick across the puddle at its widest point • The depth by putting the ruler in the puddle in different places until you find the deepest part don't forget to write down your measurements!

  13. after you have your measurements... Find the circumference, Diameter and Depth again... But without your Ruler, yardstick or string!

  14. some ideas of things to use Your pencil A leaf Your finger A rock use your imagination - and make sure to record what you use and the measurements you take on your worksheet!!

  15. when you have your measurements • Your group will share • the circumference, diameter and depth of your puddle when • you used the string, yardstick and ruler • the things you came up with to use • the new circumference, diameter and depth of your puddle • with the things you used

  16. some questions to think about as you write your reflection... What was the hardest measurement to take? What was the easiest measurement to take? Which tool worked best? Which tool was difficult to use? What was your favorite thing about the Puddle Walk? ??? ???

  17. well done on your puddle walk!
