  4. Puddle Ducks • Frequent marshes and shallow rivers • Bright iridescent speculum • Feed by dabbling, tipping • Feed in fields • Feeds on grains, nuts, and aquatic vegetation • Take off straight up

  5. Divers • Frequent larger, deeper lakes and rivers • Colored but not iridescent speculums • Paddle on water to take off • Eat fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and vegetation

  6. Mallard • Large duck, 2.5-3lbs , 24-28 inches • Chestnut chest, white belly, dark rump, green head • Blue speculum with white tips

  9. Green-Winged Teal • Smallest of puddle ducks • About 3/4 lbs. 14 in. • Tan chest with dark spots, maroon head, iridescent green eye mask • Iridescent green and black speculum

  11. Blue-Winged Teal • Small Duck, less than 1 lb. 12-16 in. • Gray with black spots • White crescent behind bill, white spot on flank • Green speculum • Whistling peep

  12. Pintail • 2-2.5lbs • Long neck, white extends from neck to belly • Bill bluish with black stripe down middle • Whistles • Buff, green speculum, white edge

  14. Shoveler • Male medium sized 1.25lbs • Cinnamon body • Black spoon-shaped bill (spoonbill) • Middle coverts blue • Greater coverts white

  16. Wood duck • Medium sized • Eyes red • Short multi-colored bill • Female: distinctive white eye ring
