  2. Geography • 5th largest country in the world. • Almost ½ of South America. • Amazon river – flows which direction? • Cerrado – grasslands and forest.

  4. Population Density • Where is most of the Brazilian population located?

  5. Population Issues • Extremely diverse country • Large, advanced city centers (ex. Brasilia) • Gap between the rich and the poor. • 10% of Brazilians own more than 70% of the land, control over 50% of the wealth. • Favelas

  6. Political Issues • 1889 – Military staged a coup. Def? • Following coup, republic with gov’t loosely based off of the U.S. • 1930 – Caudillo as Vargas overthrew the gov’t. • Democracy not restored until 1990.

  7. Present Day • Market economy – prices set by demand, not the gov’t • Increased Urban Planning • Gov’t with three branches. • Redirecting oil wealth to social services. • Deforestation in the Amazon.
