  2. BACKGROUND • Each of the following perspectives represents a method of examining the same social phenomena. • Each uses theory- a set of logically interrelated statements that attempts to describe, explain, and predict social events. • Each theory impacts the perspective- an overall approach to or viewpoint on some subject.

  3. FUNCTIONALIST PERSPECTIVES • Based on the assumption that society is a stable, orderly system. • Societal consensus- where the majority of members share a common set of values, beliefs and behavioral expectations. • Society is composed of interrelated parts, each of these parts serves a function which helps the overall stability of society.

  4. CONFLICT PERSPECTIVES • According to this perspective, all groups in society are engaged in a continuous power struggle for control of scarce resources. • This conflict can take place through a number of forms; class, race, gender, or ethnicity.

  5. SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONIST PERSPECTIVES • According to this perspective, society is the sum of the interactions of individuals and groups. • Instead of looking at the whole society (macrolevel), symbolic interactionists focus on the individuals day-to-day interactions and behaviors in groups. • Interaction: the communication between two or more people • Symbol: anything that meaningfully represents something else.
