  2. Background Info • Father was Theon who was a well know scholar at the University of Alexandria. • She was born in 370 AD and died in 415 AD at the hands of an angry mob.

  3. Conic Sections • Hypatia discovered that if you were to place a flat plane through a cone at different angles you would get different geometric shapes.

  4. Conic Section Continued • Conic sections are used today for the design of car headlights the shape of the parabola helps focus the light more. • In the classroom we study conic sections as a topic .

  5. Opinion / Extra Credit • I wouldn’t say Hypatiawas a great mathematician because she didn’t do anything that changed our life in a major way. • Hypatia was born in Alexandria, Egypt. • Euclid, Ptolemy, and Menelaus were all from Alexandria.
