  5. Emancipation Proclamation • After Antietam • Lincoln • Frees slaves in CSA, NOT Border States • Doesn’t free slaves, Lincoln has no authority in CSA • Prevents foreign allies for CSA

  7. FORT SUMTER • Lincoln sends supplies to resupply fort. • CSA opens fire on fort. • Union surrenders the fort. • Start of Civil War

  10. ANTIETAM • Maryland • CSA invades for supplies, to surround Washington D.C., get foreign support • US: McClellan • CS: Lee • CSA retreats, Union misses huge opportunity to wipe out Lee • Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation

  11. GETTYSBURG • Pennsylvania • US: Meade • CS: Lee, Pickett • Lee invades PA to get supplies • Pickett’s charge fails • After 3 days, CSA retreats • Ends Confederate invasion of the North • Lincoln dedicates battleground as a memorial and makes his “Gettysburg Address”

  12. Vicksburg • Mississippi • US: Grant • CS: Pemberton • Grant launches a major seige on the city. • “Total War” • US wins, gaining total control of the Mississippi River

  13. Sherman’s March to the Sea • Sherman wins in Atlanta, goes on a march of destruction to Savannah, GA. • “Total War” • Destruction of property, farms, businesses. • Weakens Southern morale • Allows Lincoln to win re-election in 1864

  14. Appomattox Court House • Greatly weakened by Gettysburg, Lee loses in Petersburg and Richmond. • Lee surrenders his army to Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House Virginia
