  2. Guided Notes • 1) Southern states that were dependent upon labor-intensive CASH CROPS • seceded from the Union. • 2) Northernmost SLAVESTATES (border states) stayed in the Union.

  3. The Major Southern Cash Crops of the Civil War Era Cotton became a major Southern cash crop following the invention of the cotton gin Tobacco was a traditional Southern cash crop dating back all the way to 1607
