  1. GOAL- STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND HOW SCIENTIST LEARN ABOUT THE NATURAL WORLD AND THE ROLE MODELS, THEORIES AND LAWS PLAY IN SCIENCE. Scientific Inquiry/ Scientific method

  2. Scientific inquiry/method • KEY---- Refers to the different ways scientist study the natural world. • Scientific inquiry---- the process includes- posing questions, hypotheses, experiments, collecting data, drawing conclusions and communication • Copy figure 13 p. 22 7th • Copy fig 3 p. 11 8th

  3. Copy and define 5 terms

  4. WHAT IS HAPPENING? • Key- YOU MUST Pose a scientific question! • Ex- What factors made the trees grow that way? Not which tree was the prettiest? That would be based on personal opinion and not scientific evidence • Key- Scientific inquiry cannot answer questions based on opinions, values, or judgments… SHE LIKES ME!

  5. Why and how do you think that tree is growing?

  6. SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY HYPOTHESIS- IS A POSSIBLE ANSWER TO A SCIENTIFIC QUESTION OR AN EXPLANATION FOR A SET OF OBSERVATIONS. EDUCATED GUESS EX- PERHAPS FROGS MAKE MORE NOISE WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS HIGHER QUESTION - MUST BE TESTABLE. EXPERIMENT – IS A WAY TO TEST A HYPOTHESIS. YOU MAY HAVE TO RUN SEVERAL TRIALS

  7. COLLECTING AND INTERPRETING DATA • DATA- ARE THE FACTS, FIGURES, AND OTHER EVIDENCE GATHERED THROUGH OBSERVATION • KEY- CAN BE EITHER QUANTITATIVE OR QUALITATIVE • EX- GRAPHS, JOURNALS, AND DATA TABLES ARE WAYS TO EXPRESS THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT

  8. DRAWING CONCLUSIONS • CONCLUSION- STATES WHETHER OR NOT THE DATA SUPPORTS THE HYPOTHESIS. • COMMUNICATING- ONCE YOU DRAW A CONCLUSION IT IS IMPORTANT TO SHARE YOUR IDEAS • SCIENTIFIC THEORY- A WELL TESTED EXPLANATION FOR A WIDE RANGE OF OBSERVATION OR EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS

  9. What is happening here?

  10. SCIENTIFIC LAW- IS A STATEMENT THAT DESCRIBES WHAT SCIENTIST EXPECT TO HAPPEN EVERY TIME UNDER A PARTICULAR SET OF CONDITIONS. • EX- LAW OF GRAVITY • WHAT GOES UP MUST COME ______?

  11. REVIEW QUESTIONS WRITE THE Q QND A • 1. WHAT IS SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY? • 2. NAME SIX PROCESSES THAT ARE OFTEN INVOLVED • 3. WHAT WAS YOUR HYPOTHESIS ON BREAD MOLD? • 4. WAS IT PROVED OR DISPROVED?
