  1. GMO and Farm Raised Salmon Stephen Witherspoon

  2. Who am I? • Outdoor Education • The Current Film • Making Waves

  3. Factory Fish Inspiration: • August 28 2013 • Becky Clauson • More farm raised fish than beef. • 66 million tons of fish, compared with production of beef at 63 million tons. (Earth policy Institute)

  4. What will we discuss? • Life cycle of salmon • Why Salmon are on the decline • Problems with GMO and farmed salmon • How we can protect fisheries • Smart shopping

  5. Farmed Fish and Beef Production Figure from Earth Policy Institute

  6. A Background on Salmon Anadromous • After hatching salmon migrate to the ocean where they live for several years. • Thousands of miles later they return to the stream they swam from when originally conceived and hatched. • The salmon soon die and give their nutrients back to the earth. Image of Sockeye salmon on their back to where they were hatched (NPR)

  7. Salmon Numbers on the Decline “Salmonid species on the west coast of the United States have experienced dramatic declines in abundance during the past several decades as a result of human-induced and natural factors” NOAA Fisheries Reasons: • Dams • Natural resource use and extraction “80-90% loss of historic riparian habitat in western states”(Noaa) • Management issues/over fishing • Non-native species and predator introduction

  8. Salmon Farming

  9. Salmon Farm Issues • High Density • Disease • Sea Lice • Algae Blooms • Escape

  10. What are GMO’s? GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.(nongmoproject)

  11. Are GMO’s Safe? • More than 60 countries including Australia, Japan and all of the E.U. have strict restrictions or bans on GMO’s. • “In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them” (nongmoproject)

  12. What do these have in common? Arctic Eelpout Chinook Salmon

  13. Aquadvantage Salmon

  14. Aquadvantage Salmon • Crossbred with Eelpout, Pacific Chinook Salmon, Atlantic Salmon • Grows to market size in ½ time time as wild and/or farm raised salmon • “AAS raised in land-based facilities reduce the environmental impact on coastal areas, eliminate the threat of disease transfer from farms to wild fish and grow more fish with less feed. Additionally, facilities located near major consumer markets reduce the environmental impact associated with air and ocean freight.”-Aquabount

  16. Solutions • Protecting Fisheries • Closed System Aquaculture • Smart Shopping

  17. Protecting Fisheries • Pockets of endangered salmon • mainly due to dams in the NW • Dam removal in the NW is happening • Thriving salmon fisheries • Vote for policy makers who care about protecting these fisheries

  18. Closed System Aquaculture • Aquaponics • Little to no pollution • Reuses water • Little chance of escape

  19. Smart Shopping • Only farmed salmon can be “organic” • Buying labeled “Wild Caught” salmon

  20. Smart Shopping Locally: Sunnyside Meats located in Nature's Oasis • Wester Ross Salmon out of Scotland • Since 1977 • Stocking densities of 99% water 1% fish • No growth promoters or chemicals

  21. Conclusion • Salmon are on the decline • Awareness and action can help • GMO and farmed salmon • Not going away, must work sustainability and safety • We can protect fisheries • Smart shopping
