  8. Solomon’s Death and Succession • Died of natural causes around the age of 80 • His son, Rehoboam succeeded him as king • Ten of the Twelve tribes refused to accept him as king • Jeroboam became king of the Ten Northern Tribes • Rehoboam continued to reign in the Southern Two Kingdoms

  9. The Divided Kingdom • The Northern Kingdom = Israel • The Southern Kingdom = Judah • Different kings for each kingdom • Fought off invaders • Many power struggles between the two kingdoms

  10. Once a United Family • God’s messengers, the prophets, reminded the people that they were once united • If they continued to insist on division doom lay ahead • Political dangers • Cultural dangers

  11. Prophets • Spoke the message of God to the people • Reminded the people of their past • Warned them of the dangers of sin • Encouraged the people to have strong faith

  12. Prophetic Literature • Named after the prophet • Story and/or speeches made by that prophet • Foretold the destruction of Israel at the hands of the Assyrians • Presented the people with tough decisions

Prophets • Most were men, but some were women • Communicates God’s message to the people • NOT like modern-day fortune tellers • God revealed His message to them through revelation and religious experience • Predictions depended on whether the people heeded God’s warning • Israel was successful when it listened!!!!
