  1. Career Development Module • “Nearly two-thirds of recruiters caution that graduates who have had no previous work experience are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations’ graduate programmes.” • Work experience for academic credit! • Three routes: • Student Tutoring in Schools, Colleges and Community • Student Volunteering • Learning from Work • Different, challenging and worthwhile!

Student Tutoring in Schools, Colleges, and the Community • Primary, secondary and special school placements (arranged through Careers Service) • Work in a classroom assistant role using personal enterprise and other skills to plan activities and take on more responsibility • Not just for those thinking of teaching career!

  3. Student Tutoring Community placements: • Hospital schools, sports clubs, • Teaching English to speakers of other languages, • Working with at risk groups including young offenders/those at risk of offending, • Libraries/Local Councils/Seven Stories/Centre for Life/Tyneside Cinema/Sage Gateshead… • Full details on website

Learning from Work • Use part-time term time work you have arranged (paid or unpaid, including running your own business), you will set challenging personal goals and reflect on the skills you are developing through work, building a portfolio of evidence of your achievements. The module will enable you to communicate these skills to prospective employers, and push you to achieve more in the workplace.

  6. This year’s Maths students: • Three local primary schools (Student Tutoring) • Two comprehensive schools (Student Tutoring) • One business and enterprise college (Student Tutoring) • Football Club treasurer (Student Volunteering) • Northumbrian Universities Air Squadron (Learn from Work)

  7. Skills and Assessment • You will be supported through seminars and tutorials to set personal goals at your placement, carry our appropriate research, reflect on your progress and develop skills of communication, teamworking and personal enterprise (essential in all graduate roles!) • Assessment: • Written work based on goal setting and action planning (25% - formative feedback available during sem 2) • Evaluation from supervisor at end of placement (25%) • Final Assessed Presentation OR Assessed Interview (depending on stage) reflecting on skills you have developed and achievements at your placement (50%)
