  3. OBESITY AND FUN -Obesity can be hereditary. if your family is obese, then you are at risk of becoming obese. The food you eat and the excercise you do determines obesity. -Less than 3 million people are obese world wide.

  4. Signs and symptoms • Specific examples include: Excess body fat, shortness of breath, BMI is very high, and if you blood pressure increases. • When blood pressure goes up and you are at risk of heart attack, obesity becomes a concern.

  5. Treatment • Teatment includes: Change of Diet, Increase in Exercise, Over the counter medicines, Prescription Drugs such as Meridia and Xanical, Surgery.

  6. Treatment cont. • Pounds should be lost slowly and gradually to increase the chance that you don’t gain weight back. Talk to your doctor to set Calorie limits per day and specific diets so you lose weight without losing needed nutrients. Sticking to the new diet helps maintain the lost weight. Changing back to the original diet likely means the weight that is lost will be gained back.

  7. Treatment cont. • Over the counter medicines generally do not work and can be dangerous. Always ask your health care provider before using. Prescription drugs including Meridia and Xanical can cause the patient to lose five to ten pounds. However, unless lifestyle changes are made the weight is likely to be gained back.
