  2. Nervous System • Function: Coordinate actions and transmit signals from around the body • Central Nervous System (CNS): coordinates activity of body parts in an organism. It is made up of the brain and spinal cord • Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): controls activities when our body is at rest such as digestion, urination, and salivation

  3. Nervous System: Nerve Impulses • Neuron is polarized with potassium on the inside of cell and sodium on the outside. • A stimulus makes gated ion channel to open, causing sodium to rush in the cell causing depolarization. • Cell reaches action potential, causing to send a message. • The potassium will then rush out of the cell to recreate polarization. • Sodium and Potassium then return to normal places to start process all over again.

  4. Neurotransmitters • Calcium gate opens • Calcium rushes into cell, causing a chemical called neurotransmitter to be released into the synapse. • Neurotransmitter then binds to receptor on neuron. • Depending on what neurotransmitter is released, excitation or inhibition will occur.
