  1. Lake Intercalibration Future plans 2008-2012 Sandra PoikaneJoint Research CentreInstitute for Environment and Sustainability

  2. Outline • What is new ? • Plans for future

  3. Lake IC - what`s new ? • Lake IC meeting (NL, Nov 2008) with several important decisions • BQE groups established • Started work Benthic invertebrates • Started work Fish fauna • Started East Cont GIG

  4. GIG / BQE groups ALP CB MED NOR EAST ATL Phytoplankton Macrophytes Benthic invertebrates Fish fauna

  5. Benthic fauna ?

  6. Benthic invertebrates • BQE expert group established • Leader Juergen Boehmer (DE) • Lake Invertebrates meeting, Aix, France, 11-13 February 2008 • All Member States (except FI, PT)

  7. Benthic invertebrates • Overview on methods, data • Ca 10 MS : methods, • 19 MS: data • Decision to start • With methods • With data • With advice • Action plan based on GIGs

  8. Benthic invertebrates • Discussions on pressure/habitat, possible difficulties • Still many MS: • No assessment method • Also no data (GR, BG, PL) • We found GIG leaders for • Alp (IT), Atl (UK), Nord (SE), EC (HU) • No Med GIG and CB GIGleaders

  9. Fish fauna ?

  10. Fish fauna, organisation • BQE expert group, leader C. Argillier (Cemagref) & N. Jepsen (JRC) • Fish fauna meeting, Aix, France, 31 March- April 2008 • What is available in terms of methods, data? • How can the work be organized (GIG’s or type-groups)? • Who will do what and when?

  11. Fish fauna, methods, data • 7-8 methods, 25 MS / data from app 2400 lakes • Different sampling methods • Overall willingness to start

  12. Fish fauna, Problems • Lack of reference lakes • Several MS still have no monitoring! • Few developed national methods • Lack of resources for sampling • Lack of contact between experts and administration

  13. Phytoplankton IC • Leader Anne Lyche Solheim • 1st meeting 3-4 March, Brussels • Discussion paper • Blooming metrics • Uncertainty • Combination of parameters

  14. Phyto meeting: results • NGIG – to withdraw phyto comp results (impact Cyano %) • Further development of national systems • Better methods developed • Further testing and improvement needed • All GIGs : Full BQE Intercalibration • Bloom metric – further work • Taxonomic workshops – how and where ?

  15. Macrophyte IC • Leader Geoff Phillips • 1st meeting May June (?) • Discussion paper • Abundance • Phytobenthos • Hydromorphological pressures

  16. East Cont GIG

  17. East Cont GIG • In 2004: no enough data, activity • RO-Med GIG, HU- CB GIG • Now – HU, RO, BG are ready to start • 1st meeting Bucharest, 28-29 Oct

  18. East Cont GIG • Methods – only HU (partly) • Data – HU, RO (some) • BG – will start 2008-2009 • Problems: • Lack of data, methods • Lack of capacity (experts who can spend time to collect and analyse data)

  19. East Cont GIG • What we have done ? • Description of IC common types • The ideas how to start • If we want to start • Capacity has to be created • Focus to collect data and develop methods

  20. Alpine GIG – • Phytoplankton: option 3 comparison of complete national methods • Now possible for AT+SI, GE and IT • Macrophytes: • New methods (FR?, IT?) • Pphytobenthos for other countries (except Germany) necessary or not • Agree on type coverage

  21. Alpine GIG – Benthic fauna • GE, FR, SI, IT - methods • 2008 (April) First GIG group meeting • 2008 (second semester) design the work for IC-procedure, collection of first data, report on state of advancement • 2008 (Nov) second group mtg • 2009–2010 IC exercise

  22. CB GIG • Need to clarify situation with the current results

  23. Med GIG • GIG meeting 21-22 Feb, 2008 • Application of the Chl IC results into the national systems • Agreement on criteria concerning metrics combination and overall quality classification • Review of L-M GIG IC typology, further search for shared types of natural lakes • Development of type-specific ranges of G/M boundaries vs interannual average values • As soon as sufficient data input is provided by monitoring programmes ,,,

  24. Northern GIG • Macrophytes: • For hydromorphological pressure: • For abundance (colonization depth) • Benthic fauna: • For acidification preliminary results 2008 • When NO method – results 2010 • For eutrophication – plan in progress

  25. Future plans • New BQE: benthic fauna, fish • New GIG: East Cont GIG • Gaps : • Complete BQE • All types, all MS • Problems: • No methods, no data • No capacity to work

  26. Thank you !
