Extend AIAG’s outreach to the automotive and related industries worldwide • Steering Committee Collaborations – Current & Planned • CEPD-OAGI: In place harmonizing efforts to incorporate the development of OAGI compliant BODs in the engineering arena • SASIG- ISO: Letter of intent In Place to coordinate STEP AP214 activity between SASIG and ISO • MOU- PDES Inc. In place to coordinate STEP related activities in the USA. • MOU- SASIG In place (JAMA-JAPIA-VDA-Odette-Sweden- GALIA-AIAG-FCAI partnership related to product data issues) Purpose is to harmonize PD initiatives on a global scale. • CEPD-NIST Collaborations * * PDM Pilot Project – completed Metrology cooperation – on going • MOU- ProSTEP In the works to coordinate STEP related activities in the European automotive supply chain. Metrology Interoperability Described • What is metrology interoperability? • Having an interface language specification so defined and implemented that users can interchange vendor implementations with minimal data reworking or translation or changes in vendor implementation • What is the challenge of metrology interoperability? • Defining the interface appropriately, so that the vendors have all the functionality they need, they have a lot of freedom to differentiate their product from the competition without revealing proprietary secrets, and the standards grow with changes in technology • What is metrology interoperability NOT? • Equivalent measurement results, equivalent functionality • What is the goal of metrology interoperability? • Working with and through major industry organizations (e.g., AIAG and I++), develop and maintain common languages for the key interfaces…ensure that they are widely accepted and will enable interoperable systems with sufficient functionality • Who is involved? • Users, vendors, industry organizations, and standards bodies Metrology Project Team

Metrology Interoperability Described • What are the possible solutions to the interoperability problem? • Point-to-point, single vendor, common language • What is the preferred solution? • Common languages for each interface • What are the problems and challenges of the common language solution? • Difficult to get everyone to agree, requires constant maintenance, can’t achieve 100% interoperability, vendors suspicious that they can’t achieve competitive edge if there is an open interface standard, etc. • What are the advantages of the common language solution? • Provides true interoperability, reduces costs (programming and training), since requires less time and effort, reduces measurement errors, provides greater freedom for 1) successful acquisitions, 2) best-in-class & individual preferences, 3) broader set of tailored metrology solutions, 4) integration and leverage with other domains, including electronics (NEMI), aerospace, and machine tools (OMAC) Metrology Project Team

Metrology Interoperability Described • Why is it important and what is the benefit of metrology interoperability to me (whether a vendor, supplier, or OEM)? • Saves money, saves time, improves quality, facilitates technology advances (e.g., the PC), etc. • What would be the cost of involvement? • Meeting attendance, AIAG membership, spec writing, spec implementation, conference call meetings, leadership, testing, participation, etc. • Who should get involved and why? • Anyone involved in automated dimensional metrology to save money and time and to focus on other problems than code rewrite, etc. Metrology Project Team

Driving Metrology Interoperability What started this effort? • May 2000 Metrology Summit • Major corporations met at NIST to identify problems connecting metrology equipment within their extended enterprise. • They expressed frustration with their inability to implement an efficient process: • Inability to connect CAD / Simulation / metrology System • Redundant Inspection Programs • Inspection Program Portability • Independent Quality plans • Standards slow to develop • Poor implementation of existing standards • No oversight committee / no harmonization Metrology Project Team
