  2. Death and Disease FINDING: Greenvillians are still impacted by fairly high rates of disease.

  3. Premature Death Overall in South Carolina: 9,075 National Benchmark: 5,466 (90th percentile) Premature death is represented by the years of potential life lost before age 75 (YPLL-75). Every death occurring before the age of 75 contributes to the total number of years of potential life lost. For example, a person dying at age 25 contributes 50 years of life lost, whereas a person who dies at age 65 contributes 10 years of life lost to a county’s YPLL. The YPLL measure is presented as a rate per 100,000 population and is age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. population. Source: Health Data Warehouse. 2012

Asthma • Based on 2003 estimates, 190,000 adults and 91,000 children suffer from asthma in South Carolina. • In Greenville County, it is estimated that about 16,135 adults suffer from asthma. • It is the leading cause of hospitalization in Greenville County for children under the age of 18. • US asthma cases more than tripled from 6.7 million in 1980 to 21.9 million in 2002 SCDHEC, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

Arthritis Prevalence in SC, 2009 • Doctor diagnosed arthritis affects nearly 50 million people in the United States making it one of our most common diseases. • As the population ages, this number will increase. • Arthritis is the leading cause of disability among U.S. adults, limiting everyday activities for 21 million Americans. • Each year, arthritis results in 992,100 hospitalizations and 44 million outpatient visits nationally. • Arthritis and other rheumatic conditions cost the United States approximately 127.8 billion dollars in 2003 for medical costs and lost wages. • South Carolina had a statewide prevalence of 30.7% in 2009. It was the 7th highest prevalence rate in the nation. • Almost 60% of arthritis cases are women and almost 60% of the elderly population has arthritis. Risk increases with age.

The estimates are based on responses to the question: “Thinking about your mental health, which includes stress, depression, and problems with emotions, for how many days during the past 30 days was your mental health not good?” We present the average number of days a county’s adult respondents report that their mental health was not good.   17. Maternal Health • In 2006, 5,876 women had children in Greenville County, up 133% since 2001. • Among those, 36%, or over 2,100 births, were among unmarried women. The United States rate is 29% and for South Carolina the rate is 44%. • In 2005, 73% of births with African Americans were to single mothers; 27% of white births in Greenville. Source: DHEC, 2006

  21. Mental Health • On the 2003 YRBS, 22% of boys and 33% of girls in high school reported that during the past year they felt so sad and hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more that they stopped doing some usual activities. • 11% of high school students in South Carolina reported that they had "attempted suicide" in the past year. • In 2004, there were 55 deaths due to suicide.
