Why? • Formed in 1949 in response to the threat of Soviet invasion of Western Europe after WW2 • Was (and is) a defense coalition- an alliance • Former Soviet Union (USSR) occupied Eastern Europe as its army moved toward Berlin in 1945 to bring an end to Nazi rule of Germany • Great Britain and US demanded Stalin pull his troops out of Eastern Europe • He feared another attack by Germany and kept troops in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary with Communist governments

  3. Warsaw Pact • Soviet-led political and military alliance in Eastern Europe • Countered NATO • Primary function: to keep allies under Soviet political and military control
