Our Vision… It is the vision of The University of Toledo Center for Excellence in Autism to build a continuum of services and research opportunities that satisfy the dynamic needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) across their lifespan. The Center for Excellence in Autism operates as a catalyst for seamless coordination of services that focus on the individual’s needs and areas of functioning such as communication, behavioral, social, cognitive, and adaptive or self-help skills. Special attention is given to building independence and improving the quality of life as the individual matures. From Relevant Interventions to Meaningful Outcomes

A Eye Toward The Future… One year ago, The University of Toledo and ProMedica established the Academic Health Center to enhance clinical education and ensure that a new generation of health care professionals will be ready to care for our community in the decades ahead. We look forward to the enhancements in service delivery for individuals with Autism that will result from the opportunities made possible by the Academic Health Center.   4. Program Initiatives From Relevant Interventions to Meaningful Outcomes

Global Skills University This innovative program features individual classes to address the documented needs of individuals age 10-25 such as self-regulation of behaviors, self-advocacy and problem-solving skills, recognition and adherence to social boundaries, personal hygiene and sexuality development, life skills, organizational skills/time management and causal attribution. Patterned after a university degree program, participants will be required to successfully advance through a series of required course and can then choose from a number of electives in order to graduate. Adolescent Girl’s and Women’s Wellness Initiative The objective for this initiative is to improve the range and quality of services and research opportunities addressing the needs of girls and women with ASD. Services will address education regarding menstrual cycle management, abuse detection and prevention, specialized gynecological and health care, development of self-esteem and personal care practices and positive social interactions among other things.   7. Focus on Adolescence and Adulthood • Focus on adolescence and adulthood. • Assessment, diagnosis and ongoing evaluation of children and adults. • ALL clients over the age of 10 are screened for anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD. From Relevant Interventions to Meaningful Outcomes

Data Collection andOutcomes Monitoring • ABA – In the next 12 to 18 months 100% of the clinical staff at The Center for Excellence in Autism will be certified in Applied Behavior Analysis! • Use of evidence-based practices, advanced technology that includes real-time data collection in the field and a treatment plan that incorporates assessment results into goal selection and intervention planning. • Functional Behavioral Assessment • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy • Social skills training From Relevant Interventions to Meaningful Outcomes

Issues with Current Research • Not enough in general • Priorities are almost always on children • Inadequate understanding or application of diagnostics for adolescents and adults • Very few longitudinal studies that determine conditions for best outcomes • Adults now have had very different life experiences and interventions than future generations of adults so the results from current or past research should be viewed conservatively when generalizing to others. The Research Agenda • Validation of diagnostic criteria and functional profiles that are gender appropriate. • Identification of best practices and standards for care regarding sexuality education and gynecological wellness across the lifespan. • Development of a scientific understanding of the needs of women with ASD as they mature.
