  3. What is the TPSP? • The TPSP is a classroom learning experience in whichyou will have the opportunity to explore, through research, one of your areas of interest in depth.

  4. And then have real world experiences… If you are interested in science, you will conduct studies much as a laboratory scientist would do. If you would like to be a published poet, you might like to focus on taking a poem from conception to publication.

  5. That you share with professionals in your field of interest! In May you will present your project findings to a panelist who is an expert in the field of study you chose. Everyone will present at Hildebrandt and share their findings with the school, administrators, fellow students and parents! A student presenting to Mrs. Marti Thompson presenting at District

  7. Then all 8th graders go to District and Present to Professionals from the Community! Some of last year’s district participants from Hildebrandt.

  9. How can you use • this task to make • a difference in your • community? • 2. How can you • apply the task • to a real-world • situation? • How will this • task have a • personal impact • on you? Think About . . .

  10. ALL Subjects Pursuit of Passion Description of Unit Explore the relationship between your personal interests and future opportunities. You can research what type of academic or professional goals could result from the hobbies, interests, or talents you have! The product for this task will be an original product, which includes the student’s point of view, voice, reflection, and examination of the relationship between topic and the real world. EX: Last year a student composed an original song based on his favorite piano performer. For his product he recorded himself performing the song with his friend playing the violin accompaniment that he had also written. This student showed the video, along with his research, to the appraiser at showcase.

  11. ELA Analyzing Awesome Authors • Description of Unit • Investigate the life of your favorite author! Learn how society, history, and the world’s culture influence the way they write. • Your product could be: • A short biography about the author featuring an important time period in their life that influenced their writing. • An adaptation of a children’s story told from the perspective and in the style of your author. • A display or “museum exhibit” of sorts that displays the author’s life and accomplishments. • You can assume the author’s persona and conduct an interview!

  12. ELA & SS Time Travel Description of Unit Read your favorite historical novel that features a character role from real life. EX: pioneer, politician, Civil war soldier, professional athlete, etc. 2. Investigate & determine the accuracy of the role as portrayed in the fictional account. Use primary and secondary sources to do this. Product: Participate in a Video tapped Talk Show interview where you ARE the character from the novel & answer questions about the experience.

  13. SOCIAL STUDIES Sudden Impact Description of Unit Explore provocative questions about the life of an influential person or group of people who contributed to history. You will investigate how the TIME period influenced them, and how THEY influenced the time period in which they lived. Product- A “Museum Exhibit” that features at least ten artifacts about the person, their life, and evidence of how their life impacted our current world. These items could be video clips, physical belongings, maps or newspaper clippings from dates in which they lived. At showcase, you will be the museum docent to explain and answer questions about the exhibit. *artifacts do not have to be student made.

  14. SOCIAL STUDIES Culture Shock Description of Unit Choose a different country that you would like to explore. Discover the culture, geography, and landmarks that are significant to that country. Research the language & cultural practices associated with that country. Thailand Product : Create a trip itinerary that includes guidebooks, maps, and important language phrases. 2. Create a travel blog to record events of your “journey” to the country. 3. Present your findings to an expert on the country and tell them about your research.

SOCIAL STUDIES Tell a Tale of a Trail • Product Possibilities- • A webpage with interactive maps, descriptions and research you have gathered. • A mini- museum exhibit with artifacts (not all student made) from the trail. These could be: • - letters from travelers on the trail. • Photos • Maps • Documents Description of Unit 1. Explore a Texas Trail in depth and discover the impact it had on the state of Texas, both in physical layout and in historical context. 2. Explore how the route affected the development of the state. 3. Research a city that emerged due to a Texas trail. Perhaps visit it and discuss the impact this city or town had in the Texas Revolution.

  16. SOCIAL STUDIES Rites of Passage Description of Unit Explore and research a Texas American Indian or other immigrant Group. Discover the rites of passage in the selected culture. Compare and contrast these rites with our current society and your own. Product Possibilities: A museum exhibit showing what rites of passage looked like in the past, what it looks like in the present, and will look like in the future. Should include artifacts, timelines, and other relevant visuals. 2. A personal journal where you assume the life of a teen who lived 100 years ago. Describe in details the events and artifacts used in rites of passage.

SCIENCE Challenging The System • Description of Unit • is a science unit that allows students to explore living and non-living systems and the roles those systems play in the environment and society. • Possible Products: • A letter to a company with ideas to improve a current system. • An article about your research • A video where you are the newscaster for a weather system • A story – “The Life of a Rock” or “From Lava to Land”

  18. SCIENCE Products in Motion • Description of Unit • Explore the concepts of force, motion and energy as applied to simple machines. Discover the differences between potential and kinetic energy, various sources, and the transfer of energy in processes such as warehouse/ fulfillment logistic systems. • Possible Products: • Building A Rube Goldberg machine that shows your understanding of motion. The machine must move an object from one point to another in a classroom. • A video demonstration of your machine in use for an organization or to solve a problem. • Drawings and flowcharts of a mock machine that would benefit a company.

  19. Science & Math Lifestyles of the Fit & Famous Description of Unit 1. Generate a survey of healthy lifestyle choices among students and community members 2. Investigate a sport or sports figure and discover the important aspects of math and science in that sport. 3. Research the social implications of participating in sports. 4. Conduct an in-depth investigation of a chosen health issue related to your sport. Product possibilities: Brochure or article on health problem- Includes research on impact of participating in sports. 2. Create a new sport or game. Include rules, format, scoring and how math and science are at work in the sport. 3. Learning center for elementary school about importance of healthy living.

  20. MATH Instant Millionaire! Description of Unit 1. Estimate the real costs of running a school or school club that currently exists or you would like to exist. Then create a budget for the organization and present it both graphically and in a table. 2. Now pretend you have just won one million dollars for your club or organization! Determine how your club or organization would spend the one million dollars. Research the actual costs and expenditures related to your club. Product: Create a poster, power point or tri-fold that shows each expense, and how much you would spend infractions, decimals, and percentages.

  21. MATH Game of LifeTM Description of Unit 1. Explore the career you would like to have when you grow up. Determine what type of education, training, and experience you will need to get this type of job. 2. Next, outline a three to five year plan where you determine the following based on your job and salary: - cost of college & cost of living - choice of where to live, cost of a family - how you would be involved in the community - a personal budget you could reasonably live off of Product: Present yourself to the “hiring committee” at showcase with the following: a resume, career goal plan, personal budget, and sketch of your desired home.
